Octane question
Octane question
Sorry if this is a repost.
My manual says the 2.4 SS also requires 91 octane fuel, like the 2.0.
Is this true? or necessary? or have i been puting exspensive gas in my car for no reason? I have zero engine mods.

its always best to use the recommended fuel. unless you're tuned for higher octane
use a fuel system cleaner, then fill it up with 93 octane. it should run more smoothly

Ill ask the same question here that I do in all these threads.
If your willing to pay $x extra dollars every single month to buy the more "performance" oriented engine, with more HP, why would you want to cheap out $2 at the pump and treat your engine like a ***** that you dont want to cough up the cab fare for.
They suggest higher octane for the safety and longevity of your engine.
your not necessarily gonna "feel" anything....or notice changes in MPG.
but when your car is still pullin strong at 200k miles....what fuel you chose along the way will be part of that.

I always use at least 93 octane in my 2.4l. You have to run a few tanks through to get all the bad 87 crap all the way out, (unless you completley drain your tank, then I guess two should do it)
I DO notice a difference than from the cheap stuff.
Another reason to do it is that the computer is timed to fire calculating that your using premium gas. When you put in the cheap stuff, the computer retards the firing to prevent knocking, and your performance will suffer.

i have a 2.2 and i been putting in 89. i know i cud use 87 but i think it runs better on 89. just a personal preference. the extra 10 cents isn't gonna kill u. lol. here 87 is 3.01 and 89 is like 3.11 and 91 i think is 3.15 and 93 is 3.21. 20 cents is like 4 dollars difference since our tanks are only 11 gallons. ehh, idk i dont think its a big deal.

im sure your engine will start knockin soon after using 87 gees. you should only buy 93 and up gas for the 2.4 and 2.0. i buy BP 93 or Sunoco has some really good 94 grade thats 3.35 a gallon woohoo
. thats all.
ryan.
. thats all.ryan.
is that $3.35 a (us)gallon? the canadian gallon is 4.54 liters, each liter of 87 0ctane is around $1.10. th us gallon is only 3.78 liters, which would mean that u r paying about $1.12 for the good stuff, and i am paying 2 cents less for the crappy stuff(that's per liter). either i should have gotten sleep in the last few days, or canadian drivers r getting hosed hard!....could be the sleep thing thow.

No dude, we get hosed. It's pretty stupid. 91 octane is going for $1.23/L in saskatoon right now, and it's projected to jump even higher very soon. AS in over $1.40/L
And money isn't the big thing. I was just wondering if a 171hp naturally aspirated 4 cylinder really required premium fuel.

well its a good bit cheaper for one.
and the engine should do better mileage (2.2L)....and doesnt require premium fuel....
its a car really built for someone like yourself whos gonna put alot of miles on.
