Question Small gains

OK, so I'll admit I'm a total newbie when it comes to performance mods. Most of the articles and threads I've read seem to focus on large HP gains with turbo kits. As much fun as that would be, I'd just like a small improvement to the non-SC SS.. around 20 HP. I'd like to do this with a minimal increase to exhaust noise.

Any tips would be most welcome.

that's the 64 thousand dollar question...

basically, the 2.4 is pretty we set up as-is. if you want an extra kick in the ass, bust out the wallet. an intake/header/downpipe combo will prolly hit you an extra 10-20 ponies on a good day. add to that a set of SS S/C injectors and a professional tuning, you'll def be where you want to be.

if you wanna keep the stealth, go with a good header/downpipe and toss a high flow drop in filter in the car. again, add the injectors and have it tuned.

the 2.4 section is a wealth for info on the subject.

For your car, im not sure, the easiest way to go would be to go with an exhaust and an intake. Im sure you can find a good exhaust thats hardly noticable such as the GM touring exhaust. That should get you almost there. And if your not there yet, get a downpipe with cat and it should up you a little more in hp and keep the quieter note.

Thanks for the good and concise replies, guys. I'll definitely look in to these options.

I'm a recent "Newbie" here too; also looking for small gains.... as a former school trained mechanic, and 1960s - 70s "hot roder / streer & strip racer, I did a lot of reading and searching here for a few more HP in my 2007 2.4L NA SS. What I've found is; GM put a fair amount of "HP gain mods" in the 2006 & 2007 2.4L NA SS models with VVT that are standard with the SS model.

The only mod I've found to provide a reasonable HP gain for the money is the K&N Typhoon air filter kit which provides an advertised (dyno chart) 15.94 HP increase for the NA 2.4L Ecotec 5 engine. At a cost of about $350, the K&N Typhoon is "competitively" priced against the GM Performance Parts air induction kit which provides a similar HP increase.

I'm expecting delivery of my K&N TYphoon kit http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...rod=69-4517TTK this week.

The one other "tip" is use 91 octane gasoline for best performance. You car can and will run on 87 or 89 octane, but its 10.4 to 1 compression ratio calls for 91 octane to avoid reducing the spark timing to avoid knock and ping.

16 HP is unheard of for an intake imo.. I'd be interested to see your results.

Not bad at all. So stock with the 2.4L is about 145-150HP to the wheels or so?

See the dyno chart at http://www.kandn.com/dynocharts/69-4517.pdf or try the GMPP intake in the same configuration.....

I doubt that I'll dyno and post results as my 2007 Cobalt SS is just for fun. I've been there and done that, and at this point, WHO-GAS?

Im curious to see what my car would lay down on the dyno with my current setup. (AEM CAI, CA header, XTC 2.5" de-cat downpipe, ARK N2 cat-back). I have SS/SC injectors and the harness, but I just gotta set up adate w/ GTP and his buddies to install the injectors and tune it all in w/ HP Tuners. Also, im considering switching out my 2.2 AEM CAI for the Rebel Autoworxs CAI thats actually designed for the 2.4SS.

Installation of the K&N Typhoon was very easy.... removing the standard air box was the hardest part since I don't have a lot of metric tools. The removal and install took maybe an hour total as I had numerous interuptions while I was working.

You do NOT have to remove the "air silencer" which is inside the wheel well panel and behind the passenger side headlight!

The "Drive" test: Throttle response is improved. When you go WOT, everyone HEARS IT!... great big low growl that gets louder as the engine winds up. Accelleration improved.... the 55MPH "passing" accelleration is awesome as the automatic transmission kicks down on WOT and the engine wails as it winds up heading to 80 MPH!
