ZZP Cams... Do I NEED new springs and retainers?

Hey Everyone, I'm new to the site, Figure I would join because there would be a lot more collective knowledge of the 2.4 LE5.

I have a 2009 Pontiac G6 with this motor.
So far I've done quite a few modifications, And i'm looking to squeeze a little more power from my motor.

So I'm looking at buying a set of cams from ZZP for my 2.4L LE5, It says I'll need to replace my valve springs and retainers, But I'm finding conflicting information everywhere.
Anyone have any idea on this?

So far i have a CAI, 93 octane Tune, Tunes trans, and that's about it performance wise.

ask hhrfreak he has them, also Ottawamark has them. I would say yes, considering the larger lift and increase powerband i would say you need them. Try doing exhaust mods first

I was wondering the same thing, but I decided not risk it. If you use these cams you should be bumping your rev limiter up and if you don't replace the springs you are really risking valve float. Higher lift + higher rpm + stock springs = bad. All the current ecotecs use the same springs and the 2.4l has the largest lift with stock cams.

Try doing exhaust mods first
Personally I would do all boltons before cams as well. The car needs to flow really well to take advantage of them.

DP first. ZZPerformance - 2.5 inch Stainless Cobalt/Ion Downpipe #
Exhaust next. ZZPerformance - 2.5 inch Stainless Cobalt Catback Exhaust #

The header isn't cheap, but if you can squeeze all 3 you'll be miles ahead and actually ready to take advantage of cams down the road.

As for you original Q, ZZP says: You will NEED to replace your valve springs and retainers.

That was good enough for me, I ordered the 82#s with retainers at the same time.

exhaust first then cams/springs. No point on trying to get more air in if you can get it back out

alright great thanks for the help everyone!

The only reason I didn't really look into exhaust is because I like the way it sounds now, nice and quiet but loud when I get on it.

but I suppose after a header and larger pipe I can still get a good enough muffler to achieve the sound i'm looking for.

thanks again everyone!

You can always just do header/dp and keep the stock catback as ours aren't very restrictive at all. It would sound very close to stock too.

I was thinking of first cutting out the last resonator and just replacing that. But now i'm thinking header and dp like your saying, and see where it goes from there. My car has two cats tho, but I suppose I can remove the second one

There is another thread on modding your exhaust. Here - https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-4l...xhaust-265146/

The major restrictions are the Header downpipe.... the other restriction is the pipe coming over the axel.
So get a tube bent **Mandrel** and cut that section out and replace with you pipe that you got bent.
Then install your choice of muffler.

Keeping Stock cat back.

Here is a link witch you can find in the thread I linked you to here.
CTI 2.5 Over Axel Replacement for after market muffler

Thanks for the info, I should probably mention that I drive a G6 with the LE5. There's no restrictive bend over the rear axle because there is no axle. So I don't have to worry about that.

At the moment i'm thinking i'll just leave everything stock for now but put a cherrybomb in place of the res

Been there, done that...No you would not. Sounds like absolute ****. Believe me. If you don't, send me 8 bucks to cover shipping and I'll send you mine for free. It was on my car for 5 minutes.

Actually I got to pepboys and started looking at all the parts... Long story short I ended up just replacing the resonator with a Pipe, So it's now Two Cats and Muffler only. Leaks a little, getting it welded tomorrow.
