Chevy Cruze to receive Turbocharged 1.4L engine, 40 MPG

From: autoblog.com
Rising fuel prices, both in the U.S. and abroad, means that automakers can now offer similar engines in vehicles sold throughout the world. According to Automotive News, General Motors' next small car, the Chevrolet Cruze, will be offered with a new 1.4-liter force-fed four-banger, putting out between 120 and 140 horsepower and returning fuel mileage in the 40 mpg range.

The first version of the Cruze will be a sedan, but other body styles, including hatchbacks and wagons, are likely to come to market soon thereafter. The Cobalt-replacing Cruze will be built in Lordstown, Ohio, and sales will begin next Spring in Europe after the production version of the car is shown in Paris this October.

Hatchbacks and wagon's you say?
I'd be interested to see what the Hatchback looks like. I hope the SS model comes in both Hatch and Coupe though.

...small displacement, check
...forced induction, check
...good fuel economy, check

...I smell Honda of the 90's all over again

The only thing missing is the ability to Frankenstein cars and motors, but that could come in time... hopefully

I heard about this 1.4L being in the next gen cobalt for half a year now. Not news to me. 40 mpg is, but I'm willing to bet that the 140 hp is when you aren't making 40 mpg.

well if they are smart the SS (if even available) will keep the LNF or similar. The LNF gas mileage won't hurt their overall company MPG much.

Umm you guys realize, this car is an economy car...1.4L turbo'd and 40mpg is awsome. This car will probably be pretty cheap like 13-15 thousand most. This car is not meant for speed...I mean obviously look at the design (pukes) Bigger turbo will be easy to do though since it's already turbo'd. (can't go too big of a turbo because of the extremely small displacement...) And if people really want performance out of this car, I see a lot of swaps coming in the future just like the honda guys....

I have heard, but don't know for sure, that the LNF Sky and Solstice are better in milage than the 2.4 base ones are.

This really sucks....

It's going to be just like Honda's old days (like some of you posted). Little Chevy Cruze hatch, with a B18 swap & a turbo, & nos...

BOOOO! Chevy, you fucked up!

It's only a screw up if they don't sell cars.

My prediction is that they have a ton of recalls and problems. But that's a nostrodamus type prediction

I just think they are "downgrading" (I don't know much of a better word for it). I understand they want better fuel economy, but why don't they go a hybrid route?

I think that some people will buy them, but to make this car the replacement for the Cobalt, is a mistake IMO.

Hybrids aren't the answer. Europe figured that out with the arrival of the Prius. Diesels are more economical. The Volt is a tad better b/c it only has one drivetrain(electric), but it still has the weight issue of dealing with two motors. You shouldn't need two motors unless its a show car. Like that twin engine Tiburon I saw on Streetfire.

Hybrids will never be the answer.

They can have their 1.4turbo, i'll keep my 2.2L.

Wonder what the internals will be. Forger or what?

Dunno. The turbo for the car isn't going to be that big obviously, so maybe not?. I'll keep my 2.2L as well. No replacement for displacement.

Can't wait for the Cruze bumble bees. Those small motors will sound horrible. Not that a 2.2 sounds amazing

ugh, it's a sad topic, soon enough the noobs will have extreme hard time customizing their cars to get power out of them if they all follow GM's path with < 2.0L engines
