2.4 LSJ Swap. NEED INFO

I have an LSJ puching well over 300 hp. I just bought a used LE5 (2.4) motor and wanted to swap out the block to make a 2.4 LSJ. I found some guy, username "fullthrottle", tried to do it on the redline forums but I cant find detailed info on it. Can anybody help me on this? ZZP is building these engines but wont help me out and I dont blame them since there like the only ones who have figured it out so far.

Put the LSJ head on the 2.4 block...done.

I have that exact build going on a few threads down.

One thing to consider tho is a 2.4 block with the 2.0 head and a stock head gasket is in the neighbourhood of 11:1 CR.

So you will have to deal with that.

Seriously tho, it's that simple.

I will add since you have a cobalt you will need to run the 2.4 flywheel as it is 6 bolt and not 8 bolt like on the LSJ/LNF.

Also you will have to check what you need to do about getting the trans to bolt up properly. Not sure if you will need to reuse the factory trans spacer plate.

Also double check the crank trigger wheel is the same, not sure what the LSJ has for a crank wheel.

Other than that you might need a few peices here there but it's pretty simple.

There have been guys on j-body.org build hybrids with 2.4 bottom ends long before ZZP did it, like I said it's quite simple.

It's a lot more work than you think. Spare yourself the trouble and click on add to cart on the website, lol. Either way good luck with your build!

if i do attempt to build it i would get the 9:1 comp pistons from ZZP and forged rods

No its not. The LE5 has a 6 bolt flywheel. The LSJ has an 8 bolt. So you are going to have to find a flywheel/clutch solution to work between the LE5 and F35. Fullthrottle spent a lot of money having a custom flywheel made. I am pretty sure ZZP won't sell you one of theirs.

Go with a 2.1L ecotec.

LSJ head and crank
LE5 Rods, Pistons and block.

LSJ is 86mm bore x 86mm stroke = 2.0L
LEf is 88mm bore x 98mm stroke = 2.4L

The build would be a 88mm bore x 86mm stroke = 2.1L

I'm aware, I noted that in my second post.

As its been noted before the Saturn L200 came with a 2.2 Eco and a F35 trans.

2.2/2.4 Eco use interchangeable flywheels.

I'd bet dollars to dimes if you bought a flywheel for a L200 you could use a 2.2/2.4 clutch and it will work properly with the F35 trans.

Also, a member of J-Body.org managed to bolt an F23 to a LSJ block using I believe the 2.2 flywheel and a LSJ clutch, so in theory the reverse of that SHOULD be possible. Its worth it to dig deeper into your options here as well.

Obviously some leg work on the OP's part will be nessacary, where as the ZZP is a bolt in solution....but where is the fun in that?

The motor however is very straight forward to put together.....just need to sort out the flywheel/clutch/trans issue.

well the f23 requires a lot more work than that but it is cheaper than an upgraded trans.

That guy I mentioned did it in a J-body, which comes factory with a F23, not a cobalt.

What I'm saying is if you can bolt a F23 to a LSJ, in theory you should be able to bolt a F35 to a L61/LE5.

the relucter wheel is different and you can swap an lsj wheel on it but you will have to open the windows so the sensor can read the sensor spacing is way off the 6 bolt flywhel hits on the inside of the bellhousing and light grinding wont fix it there is way more to it then one thinks

Ya, I'm not really wrong at all.

They are both 60-2.

Is it confirmed that the VR sensor on the LSJ won't pick up the reluctor wheel on a LE5 that uses the hall-effect sensor? Or are you just assuming this??

Looking at my LE5 wheel I can't imagine the slots being able to be much bigger on the LSJ wheel without leaving too little material in between the slots.

This issue must be solvable if ZZP has managed to do this, unless they are running an external trigger wheel, which is also another option.

If the 2.2/2.4 flywheel will hit the bellhousing, then look into what flywheel the L200 uses, or try and suck up to ZZP and maybe they will sell you one of theirs.

All I'm saying is that putting a LSJ head on a LE5 block is easy....there appears to be a few other issues that need resolving to "swap" the motor into the car.....but they are not the end of the world as everyone is trying to make it out to be.

If you want it to be easy, buy the swap from ZZP.

If you like a bit of a challange and don't mind putting in the leg work, do it yourself.

Run the F23 transmission with a LE5/L61 clutch and flywheel. The F23 trans is pretty cheap to get. See if you can find a Quaife limited slip and put that in before you do the swap. It would be a damn quick 2.4 down the strip.

But then you run into the crank sensor issue...

Even he did not get it completely figured out.

That is why I say stick with the 2.1L ecotec. The only thing you might need is a spacer for the crank sensor if you don't change the reluctor.

to avoid this

The crank ring is off by 12 deg (difference between LE5 and LSJ). You would need to replace the ring on the LE5 crank with the LSJ ring."the start and stop points for the ring are not the same and then once you swap the rings you have to open up the lsj ring so the sensor will read

Here is your flywheel solution. You can put this on your LE5 block and run the f35 trans in your LSJ.

Pretty simple.

Cobalt & Ion ---> ZZ Performance
