AWD Cobalt SS

Hey Guys,

All trolling aside...

Has anyone attempted to do an AWD conversion on a Cobalt? I understand that there would definitely be some serious hurdles to overcome, however, as an engineer I am curious much the same.

If no-one has attempted this before, would any other vendors be interested in working with me on this?

I swear some threads talked about this over the years, but nothing came about. You'll have to think of a donor car drive train etc. The MS3 was done with a MS6 setup, just had to shorten the drive shaft. You could also ask Powell.

my guess is it would barely be possible. anything can be done, but would you be the man to do this?

heres my thought: buy a wrx, and take the shell off the cobalt and put it on the wrx.

The Saab 9-3 has AWD and a 2.0 L4 engine. I suspect that it may be a good candidate.

If someone would make an AWD conversion, I would be one of the people getting it

This might be your best candidate depending on the wheelbases of both cars.

I just want to know how the twisting beam rear axle would play into this. Something tells me that our rear axle is going to be the tricky part, and we can't just swap over another car's rear suspension.

Also: good to hear that there are other engineers on this site

Yeah, the wheelbase seems to be off by about an inch (9-3 105.3, CSS 103.3), but I assumed already that a custom drive shaft was in order.

The rear suspension was also my concern. It MAY be possible to re-use this as well. Rear suspension, All wheel drive (XWD). Fits: Saab 9-3 | Jim Ellis Saab Parts

Idea. Tube chassis, sky 2.4 dropout, cobalt body.

Never mind that's not awd
