Another headliner thread - pics

I redid the headliner and rear shelf about two weeks ago but didn't get any pics until yesterday...

Rather than suede, I went with a grey vinyl upholstery fabric that matches the seats and painted all of trim and the pillars black. The vinyl ended up looking great, but due to its thickness, was a pain to use...

Also installed a dome light :

Total cost: ~$100 (including $40 for the dome light)
Time: 2 full weekends
PITA factor: 8/10 (the sunroof panel was the worst and the reinstall wasn't much better)
Recommend to others: YES!

that looks great, you did an excellent job, verry clean, how much fabric did it take you to do the headliner and where did you get it? I'm going to do mine but i'm unsure how much fabric to get and I'm also having a hard time finding local places that sell fabrics.

Since I did the rear shelf and the headliner I went conservative and got 5 yds... I actually ended up using a little over 4 and that includes having to redo the sunroof panel once...

I got the fabric from a home fabric store - the kind that sells bulk fabric for furniture upholstery. The fabric was $4/yd (believe it or not the epoxy, adhesive, and fabric glue cost me more than the fabric). The key to the fabric is to get the correct thickness - get something to thin and your headliner adhesive will come through... too thick and you will have fitment issues. The fabric I purchased was almost too thick...

You can try a JoAnn's fabric, but their vinyl tends to be too thick... If you go there you may want to stick to a microsuede - they usually keep their upholstery fabrics in the back of the store... you can also check e-bay, but with that you run the risk of not knowing what you are buying...

oh boy... look at the headliner in your car - you will notice that in the back you have two coat hangers...one on either side. You will also notice that in the center you have a trim panel clip that holds the headliner in place. Rather than having the tan/grey color factory crap with the tan clips, the headliner now matches the seats perfectly (the texture and color of fabric is the same as the seats - the color in the pictures is a little washed (notice the color of the seats as well) out due to flash/lighting). Yeah, I could have done black suede - but then you have to deal with wrinkling, finger marks, doesn't match anything else, cleaning considerations, etc. I also could have dyed it - and dealt with spray lines, color shading, doesn't match, etc. This makes the car actually lighter inside and matches the interior color scheme. I painted all the trim and accent pieces black so that they would tie into the black/grey of the rest of the interior. The 'creases' are the natural result of the fabric, and will occur when wrapping due to the curvature of the piece...think leather....

Now in the rear where you have less curvature, the fabric lays nice and flat. The two black ovals are my speaker covers for my 6x9's. If you decide to cover your rear shelf, you will still have to create a 'breathable' space above your speakers so that the sound comes through. Rather than cover it over (fabric is not very breathable - creates a muffled effect), I simply opened it up (after all, my 6x9's provide my mid-bass so I would rather not have a 'filtered' effect caused by unnecessary fabric)... If you decide to invest in a quality sound system, I highly recommend doing this - makes a nice difference...

Just a question bro., dint notice the middle clip in my car. Still looks horribly wrinkled in the front by the sun visors. I didn't know a the tan headliner was crappy quality. At least mine isn't wrinkled. You can take that "oh boy" and do you know what with it too

still gave ya props on the rear speaker work.

Chill fifi... Read carefully, my response was not to insult you, merely to inform you. Should you prefer the tan/grey liner than more power to you....

No need to get defensive - after all I didn't view your critique as an attack....rather it showed me that I had not fully informed everyone of what my intentions were or the reasoning behind my decisions. In the future I will try to better clarify from the start rather than allow one to invoke one's own interpretation.

I didn't mind your explanation. It's the "oh boy" that ticked me off. Next time leave that part in your mind

not only do the wrinkles look bad but it's gonna also look bad when it gets dirty since it's so light. You can see smudges on my tan liner. Imagine yours.

Hence the choice in fabric... Cleans extremely well and is easy to protect. You could try scotch guard on your headliner - may work well...or you could always dye it
