Cobalt Cupholders

I'm a student at Lehigh University who is working on a design project with GM. Our mission is to redesign the Cobalt's cupholders, and we need your input.

Please take a minute to answer a few questions, and maybe you'll see your ideas implemented in the '09 Cobalt.

1. What is the best location for a cup holder?
a. in front of the shifter (current location)
b. next to the emergency brake
c. in the air (e.g. from the dashboard)
d. other (please specify):

2. Should the cup holder have the ability to be hidden? Yes No

3. If the cup holder is hidden, what is the best way to hide it?
a. cover with a sliding door
b. cover with a hinged door
c. put in dashboard
d. other (please specify):

4. Should the cup holders for the back seat be moved? Yes No

5. Should the cup holder have the ability to heat and/or cool?
a. heat
b. cool
c. both
d. no preference

6. Should the cup holder be adjustable? Yes No

7. Would you be willing to adjust the holder yourself, or should it be self-adjusting?
a. you adjust
b. self-adjusting
c. no preference

Any additional comments or suggestions? Thank you for your input.

1. yeah leave it in front of the shifter BUT move the a/c input.. gets in the way when something is plugged in
2. no difference to me
3. hinge door is easier to work with and less likely to fail
4. leave the backseat cupholders alone.. they come in handy
5. being that i think hot stuff needs to cool most of the time, id say only cool option
6. yes
7. id say we adjust it; self adjustment might not be what we expect

1. I only use the rear cupholders. Anything in the driver's area is too in the way.
2. I don't really care.
3. see #2
4. No, those are the only ones I use even for my drinks, but it'd be nice if they were deep enough to actually hold anything. As is you can't even put a can of pop back there without it flying out.
5. None of the above. I'd rather be without the extra weight of heating/cooling elements.
6. Doesn't matter, as long as it holds most drinks.
7. see #6

Thank you for your input. yeah, my dad has an old '95 toyota tacoma (one of the best trucks around) and his cupholders slide in and out of the dash, when they're out the just cover like the heat and where it points (when it's your car you know where those controls are anyways) and when it's in it's entirely out of the way, never has dirt or garbage in it, by far my favorite cupholder setup on any car I've ever been in

I love the Cobalt but I just feel like the placement for the cupholders wasn't very well thought out. Thanks!

move the shifter back a little that will make the cupholder perfect.

1. I'd say next to the e-brake BUT it has to be placed so that it's not hitting your forearm when you shift. the "punching drinks" comment was dead on, and it's annoying, however I'd equally hate to smash a weak cup full of soda cause I had to shift quickly.

2. Hidden would be cool, but I wouldn't fault chevy for it either way, I use them for storage of keys etc.. when they're not holding cups.

3. If anything - sliding - would just look the slickest.

4. keep the back ones, but like it's been said, they're not up to snuff. either the center console idea was good, or beef em up to work as well as the front ones.

5. Both... if it can be made to cool, it can be made to heat and both would be really cool. Also, throw some lights in there like scion did

6. Adjustability would be REALLY cool.

7. and I wouldn't mind doing it myself, but put some thought into how...if it's a manual adjustment, it had better stay adjusted...not come loose on a bumpy road...and if it's automatic...how? cool...but how?

I hate when cupholders are visible.. yuck and i hate when u have something in the cupholder and u go to shift and u hit the cup or the cup is in the way of the control knobs. Personally I like the no cupholder period option... would make everything a lot easier.

later

Just leave the cup holders alone, lol. When i worked for bmw,cup holders were the number 1 complaint. They always broke on those things. If anything, put a cooler/heater cupholder like the dodge calibers or whatever the hell that car is.Maybe a cooler in the glove box.

For an ss/sc...

1. What is the best location for a cup holder?
a. in front of the shifter (current location)

2. Should the cup holder have the ability to be hidden?
Yes, if it's done properly and doesn't have a cheap-looking cover

3. If the cup holder is hidden, what is the best way to hide it?
b. cover with a hinged door

4. Should the cup holders for the back seat be moved?
Not necessarily moved, but made deeper to better hold 12oz and 20oz soda cans. Launch can make that messy sometimes.

5. Should the cup holder have the ability to heat and/or cool?
d. no preference (however, it would be a nice option)

6. Should the cup holder be adjustable?
Yes (but not in a cheap-looking way)

7. Would you be willing to adjust the holder yourself, or should it be self-adjusting?
c. no preference

Any additional comments or suggestions?
Instead of just worring about heated/cooled cupholders, GM should also do the "mini-fridge" kind of thing in the glove box that Dodge did with the Caliber. That'd be pretty cool.
