sooo if you want anything touched up or changed let me know, I can revise them as necessary but for now I just whipped these up quick as they were the two main ideas

this may sound dumb and it probably is, but im just thinking out loud here

what about using the reverse lens on the outer tail? i know it wont fit, but im talking about cutting the stock outer lens and putting the reverse lens in the outer housing, and then using the AVS taillight covers to hide the graft marks?

the more i type and think about it the less i think it would work. but im not going to delete all of this typing. ill just take the dumb post of the thread award.

it wouldn't look clean at all, you could never make a clean enough seam. It would be less work to custom form lenses and paint them accordingly or try to retrofit aftermarket smoked housings.

Nice work Matt. Thanks for the chops. I gotta say, after seeing this I think it looks pretty good. The first thing I though of after seeing this is Ferrari. Here take a look.

Ferrari 458

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

Ferrari 599 GTO

makes me wanna do it more and more.

just gotta figure out how we can get the two colored lenses,

EDIT:
just remembered VHT makes a red "tint". saw it on TRUCKS on Speed. they use it on older cars with faded lenses to brighten them up.

could it work?

i would like to see this done but me myself id like to have the normal taillight setup with clear lenses then you could spray chrome reflective areas black and do the skyline mod with clear lenses.

i think this would look sick

VHT Nite-Shades™ Red
Perfect. If it comes out like the cap of the spray can I think that would look great. This got me thinking that for the time being, as in before a g5 trunk can be aquired, the red w/white inners and outers would still look pretty nice. And it would still match other Ferrari rear ends

It's not that we haven't thought of that, I think its that we're looking for a cleaner, more stock look (possibly a Ferrari look , but that's more of a coincidence).

I think I'm going to pick up some junkyard tails in a few days and tear those down to start making the molds.

I'm going to have to take a look at how the reverselights hook up to the car. So here's what I'm thinking for the reverse lights part: leds light sets like you can find in some of those flashlights. Like the 5 led setups. It should be bright enough. That way they already have the mirror backing and should be able to hook up just a positive and negative so it should be easy. It will just be a matter of mounting the setup to the back of the unit.

I think what will prove to be most difficult will be mounting the LED rings correctly so light doesnt bleed into the clear section of the reverse light (and vice versa for when you have the reverse lights on). Some sort of light "block" will be needed to solve that issue.. so figuring out how to attach everything will be interesting. once the grunt work is done the wiring really shouldnt be terrible, but given you plan on running LEDs your going to have to run some sort of PWM to control the dimness of them and resisters for hyperblink.. but I'm sure you got that all figured out right?

I thought of the light block also, but really its not needed. The brake and turn would be red led ring. And the reverse light would be a normal white bulb. So when it turns on it lights up it will be white with a red outline

I was thinking about it, but the more I think about it the less I want to do it. I like the look, I really do, but by the time I spend over $100 making the tails I need to spend a minimum of $350 for a g5 trunk I'm not sure its worth it just for the looks.

*****

you could always just run your "newly designed tails" on the outers and keep your trunk for a while.. then eventually get the g5 trunk.... its not like all 4 tails together would look bad or anything
