Any vehicle on the road must have a red reflector of sort in the rear of the vehicle.

The Lexus' that have the all clear taillights have a RED REFLECTOR in the bumper. That's what makes those legal.

These will never be DOT approved, not would you want to even try to incur the costs to do so.

I would not even try to have the "DOT" stamp on them. That's just asking the actual person/company making these for trouble. That's how a couple of the large taillight manufacturers got fines & suits against them.

I'm not saying not to do it... just saying not to claim them as "dot" approved... and clarifying the reason the Lexus' clear taillights are legal, and why these wouldn't be.

I love clear tails... and had the "illegal" all clear tails on my Cavalier back when I had that.

thanks for looking out. I would definitely have a disclaimer and I would really never say they were dot approved seriously.

thats what i have been telling everyone ... EVERYTHING that i make (clear corners for the ion's, the hid projectors for all cars and now the clear taillights for all cars) is NOT DOT approved .....

because i have the ability to make it so i dont have to waist paint to do this .... plus if the customer ever decided to go back to chrome (stock) then all they have to do is remove the lens and then remove the insert and BAM back to stock housing color .... that way its interchangeable .... also with doing this i can easily able to modify the way that the inside looks .... its awesome on what i can do

looks good. so whats the deal with these clear tails? for the whole legal thing, just keep the third brake light red, or maybe add on a reflective thing to it just in case you get pulled over for it, saying you have a red reflective lense or whatever...

quick question, why did you hack up the lense instead of heating and separating it from the chrome part?

1) This taillight was broken from a rear ender that i was in ....
2) I want to keep the outer lining to keep as a outline .....

Until i get at least 1 FULL set done im going leave it so i can have the exact line to where i can cut .... BUT if i can imagine correctly ...... unlike the cobalt lens the ions have a huge overhang that makes it so that the lens will not be able to be completely replaced ..... make sense?

Honestly though this is the way i see things happening. You make a mold with the stockers that has the DOT approved stamp on them and get pulled over for your tails. Just take the cop back there and show him the logo. Im willing to bet that he isnt going to know that they arent approved...Unless he is being just a complete *******

yeah but if you try pulling that over on him you will get into even bigger trouble ......but on the RL's if i remember correctly there is no DOT stamp on the lens .....

heres just a little idea that i had for the reflectiveness.... but it didnt really come out the way i thought it would have but its ok looking tho ..... but i have a couple other different ideas that can be done ...... also if you did use this insert you would still be able to use the reflector thats on the inside of the taillight .....

To those wanting a "legal" version... you would have to have some sort of RED reflector (inch by inch or so) somewhere in the rear corners of the vehicle. On the taillight or somewhere else.

I had a small red reflector with a magnet on the back that i just stuck on the rear corners of my car when I drove that... when I had all clear tails. No problems.

the black is the custom formed piece to get rid of the chrome ... alot of others where saying that they didnt want the chrome .. so instead of having to paint i made that insert ... i made the pic of them three seperate so that everyone would be able to see what is done to make them look like that ..... the clear/white plastic didnt come out the way i hoped ... instead i have some clear spray that has a reflective stuff in it and i am going to test it on this to see if i can use this so that there will be some sort of reflectiveness in them so the cops will not have a huge fit .....

So technically if there are a set of clear tails made cant we just find somewhere to mold some reflectors in and be perfectly legal?
