I have a hid kit in my trailblazer from over 4yrs ago. Still works great actually better than the newer kits I have gotten. The only time you actually need a relay is for bi xenon setups. I single hid setup doesn't need a relay. But sometimes the bulbs in the older kits don't always line up perfect depending on what bulb your using so sometimes you have to work the headlight bulbs to make them fit perfect.

i used a dremel tool to trim one of the notches and it worked out great. havent had any issues with em. going on a year and they're still working great.

Youre right, it doesnt NEED a relay harness, just you dont techincally NEED to use fuses, but its definitelty the preferred and safer way to go
