depending on the side of replacement wand 1/2 " or 1/4 " yo will need to find an object that will make a 3 " ring. so if you use the 1/4" wand you will need an object with a diameter of 2 1/2". if you use the 1/2" wand you will need and object with a diameter of 2 ".

As for the dimness near the one end why not just add another to the other end?
