Im going to be painting my new set of headlights this week. I've decided to paint them the color of my car. So I went to the automotive store and picked up srtc for the headlights, My question is what can I do to make this automotive paint stick to the plastic of the headlight. I've figured I need some type of primer but really I don't know of a primer that is a plastic primer that you could use on automotive paint. Any suggestion would be helpful.


Oh btw, what sandpaper can i use to to sand the chrome off the headlight bezel or do you think I can leave that surface on there and just prime and paint it?

 

you should sand it with fine sand paper anything greater than 600 grit. that should be enough for it to stick. just dont do too much or too little.

 

So no primer? I would really want to make sure before I do this. I spent enough money on this paint so I really don't feel like wasting it. :P

 

HAHA. IM SURE YOU DIDNT SPEND TOO MUCH. my dad spent 600 per gallon for his paint. but im sure youll be fine if you sand it down really well and tape it off. and clear after to make it last. its all about the prep work

 

they make sandable plastic primer in a spray can

 

I just used regular primer. You have nothing to worry about. I sanded ALL the chrome off on the areas I was painting. Spent a good hour sanding each light correctly.

I used automotive paint. No need to worry about any of this, you're over thinking.

Go to the store, buy some sandpaper, primer and ANY kind of rattle can paint you want to use (except kinds made for metal).

Take apart headlights, sand them down good, primer them, let dry, paint with any type of paint (I used a matte black). Let dry for 24 hours before resealing since the paint is releasing chemicals. Enjoy headlights!
