Paint Flaking Off Wheels/Problem With Dealer
Paint Flaking Off Wheels/Problem With Dealer
Has anybody had problems with the paint flaking off on the back wheels? Both of them are going like that now. I can tell it started with a rock chip but the paint is off in like 1/4" sections. I was at the dealer today and the body shop warranty manager came out to look at it and said it looked bad and them tried to tell me it is normal for that to happen. I've had many aluminum rims and I know a car with only 10000km on it shouldn't be as bad as they are. The chips remained chips not flakes. The dealer has to get a hold of Gm and they are going to let me know what's going on......
I've got a pic...I can get someone to put in on the net for me..so that I can show you guys.....

I have same problem with my Rims and "Flaking" is an accurate description. To date 3 of my Rims have this flaking which I noticed it at about 300km (The First time I washed my Car) I contacted the Service Manager at John Holland Chevrolet in Burlington then brought the vehicle in so that he could tell me that "Those are STONE chips" (Magic stones that do not scratch the Body Paint). I gave the Service Manager a few weeks time to investigate and consult GM service warnings. When I came back to the Dealership the Service Manager still claimed the problem is due to stone chips (He never investigated squat) and addionally he informs me that "since this was condititon in which you bought and received the vehicle it is now it is your responsibility". I informed him this was all interesting considering several people on different Cobalt forums have discovered a similiar problem futhermore at the Detroit Woodward Cruise GM's Cobalt SS/SC display car had the same flaking problem. So I'm not satisfied with the Service Managers attitude and position for this problem. My first and Last vehicle purchased from John Holland Chevrolet in Burlington.
I have the same problem, both my rear wheel are in really bad shape. the dealer are gonna have them both repainted unde waranty , i didn't have any problem. Now my only concern is that the paint job is a perfect match. I'M putting my winter wheels on this week so i can send them my two rear wheels. This should be under warranty sorry for you guys, i didn't have any problem at my dealer. it's easy to see that those are no rock chips. Bye

To me, looks like I will be calling Chevy again this coming Monday. I will call them every week till this is fixed. This is total BS in my opinion.
I'm having the same issue, i'll just print this thread and take it to my dealer. They're slackers tho, I told them to fix my sunroof button & they said they'd have the parts in a week and will call me. That was few months ago.
Yep , same problem here . Mine isnt simply just flaking off . Its starting to bubble up from underneath on spots on all 4 wheels . Then the paint flakes off where its bubbling up . My wheels have even been in the garage off the car all thru winter , outa the weather and salt . Im just gonna wait till spring to take care of it . My dealers pretty cool about warranty work and I clearly have a problem , so Im sure they will replace them all .
Man guys , this car isnt even a year old . I would flat out DEMAND new rims as replacements , not remanufactured ones . And if the dealer still wont do that , go above their head and contact your regional GM representative . I don't see how the dealers that are doing that are getting away with it . Maybe if the car was 3-4 years , but not as new as the SS is .

ccusum - I think it would be wise of you for you yourself to contact your regional rep if the dealer is giving you greif about the wheels . I cant say that I would trust your service writer is actually in contact withthe regional rep . Sounds like they just flat out dont wanna deal with it .
How do I contact the regional rep? I was thinking that everyone on here should start calling GM and complain to them about the wheels. I think more then one voice calling GM and they might actually fix the problem, or at least the CO who made the wheels.
Well, the Service Manager called me today and told me that they are going to repair the wheels. I wish it was a replace, but I will settle for a repair. The only bad thing is that the car will be out of commision for 2 days or so. I just have to make sure that when I pick it up, they will be an exact match to the rear wheels. If not, there are going to do them again until they get it right.
Will keep you guys posted as more details come in.

I took my car in now to get the two rear rims painted. They told me two days and it would be done. That was on last Tuesday. So I called them on Friday since I didn't hear from them. They told me they couldn't paint just two and they would do all four cuz there was no way to match the paint right. So now they tell me it won't be done till next Tuesday. Which means it will be two weeks for them to paint four wheels. I'm quite pissed about the time it's taking. Oh well
if my dealer dotn wanan replace the rim im gonna have to bite the bullit and buy one, im goin to a car show on the 25 and i want my car spotless, i knwo the parts guy and i also get 15 percent off any purchase over the counter, so if the dealers try to punk me off, im printing this thread, and sammin it in there face, if they still wanna be dicks, ill call Gm, and if worse coems to worse ill buy a rim, but these are the problems i shouldnt be worrying about with a brand new car.
distillion - I can try to get a couple pics of mine in the next couple days . Mine is pretty bad though . The paint on mine is prominently bubbling , kinda like the clearcoat would start to bubble off a reeeeeeally old rim .
hey silve ss/sc do you have pics of yer rims yet, grr,now i notice the same thing on the front passenger, gonna get an oil change on sat morning, gonna let them know about this, they better do something man or ill be pissed.
Here ya go man . Its the best example of whats going on , on all 4 of my rims . I went to the dealer today , they said they cant make desicions on warranting rims , they have to go thru chevy directly because of the cost associated with replcement . They did say I shouldnt have any prob at all getting 4 new rims though . I told them I wont accept reman's , no way on 8 month old car .....and they agreed totally . Its up to chevy's rep now . Good luck with yours .
damn...good to know I am not alone. Washed the Cobalt the other week and noticed little spots where the paint is chipping off, but only on the back wheels, none on the front so far. I thought at first that it was from going up and down my driveway which is all stone, but there is no way. It doesn't make sense. And as slow as I travel up and down my driveway, it should not be chipping like that. And it especially doesn't make sense why the back ones are chipping and not the front. I'm going to ask somebody at my work about replacing them. This is bullshit, the car is only a couple months old.
holy!, mine looks toally different than that, that looks horrid, mine almost looks like thre is access paint left behind of the edges of the spoke on 2 of the rims, i will wait it out and bite my tounge and if it gets to where it starts lookin like yers i will bring it in, good luck with yer issue bro and thanks for the pic.
