In the process of redoing headliner and want to get it right

I'm in the process of redoing my head liner black with actual head liner material from Jo-Anns. My question is do I need to rip up the old headliner and how much of it do I need to rip up? Do I go all the way down to the white base, the dark grey foam, the light grey foam/carpet, or even just place the new fabric on top of the old? Also how do you recommend doing the sun visors? Thank you in advance for your help.

i got my headliner done professionally. he simply put the new material over the existing.
and go to the end of the headliner. you dont have to wrap around white and the gray because when it is installed you WONT see it

heres a pic

im bringing the sunvisors to the guy next week. he said some he can do some he cant.
if he cant do them than i am sending them to Aslyum Custom Interior. they have a facebook page.

i got my suede from The Miami Corporation. they have a warehouse in my town. Aslyum reccomended me to them. legit stuff. 16 a yard. compaired to the 26 a yard at joannes AND comes with the foam backing.

Will do that tomorrow. You have to peel the visor apart from the middle and break off the mirrors. Then I glued the new material on the inside(its just cardboard under the material) and gorilla glued the visors back shut. It's definitely not a professional job but for a first time upholstering anything I'd say I did a pretty damn good job.

nice!

my girlfriend redid hers and it looks bad. I told her to trace them out, and do them inside out with a nice stitch, flip them right side out, and slide over the visor like a sock, and then just stitch the end shut. I think shes going to do that sometime this month

What kind of glue do you use to put the new material on the old headliner, and did you do it while it was inside the car or did you have to take the headliner out ?

It looks great btw, i might atttempt it on my car !

Thanks

If you have access to air there are many glues better than the 3M aerosols. Spend the extra money to pick up cheap gun from HF and spray DAP Weldwood in the blue can.
1 Gal. DAP Weldwood HHR Contact Cement
If any of you have ever tried to strip a vinyl top this is the stuff they use.
