Absolutley, you can grab the wheel/bag/coil off of a salvage Balt/G5/HH

Yeah we can make cruise and radio happen. we could proly even make the wheel DIC controls work if we really tried.

 

While the airbag connectors might be the same you'd want to do more research on the controller. The W-body probably still uses the different deploying (left-right) design. In a collision the airbag control module is programmed to fire off the airbag at an exact moment in the collision. Different airbag modules in the steering wheel can take different amounts of time to fully inflate once it receives the signal to activate the ignitor, and the airbag control module is programmed only for the airbag that the vehicle came with.

Just as an example, Kia and Hyundai had some of their airbag systems firing a few milliseconds too late or early a few years ago in IIHS testing. Hyundai reprogrammed the controllers to correct for this and that one little change of a few milliseconds (1/1000-th of a second) made a difference between the car getting a good rating instead of marginal.

It may be possible to physically install a steering wheel and airbag from another car but be aware it may not perform as intended. An airbag that doesn't work correctly can be more dangerous and potentially cause injury rather than preventing it and affording supplemental protection to your seat belts.

I'm guessing I would also need all the buttons/wiring/connectors for the controls to work? Although I did plan on upgrading to a double din Navi unit which would in a sense kill my radio controls too. As long as cruise works, I can live with the rest!

 

The buttons/connectors come with the wheel. Depending on exactly what you want to do you my need to get a hold of some 20-22 gauge wire. Your steering wheel controls will most likely still work, most high quality aftermarket HU support external controls either from the factory or through the use of an adapater box.

 

Sweet. I would just like the cruise and radio to work for time being, DIC can wait as I have those on the dash.

 

OK I might be being stupid about this.. Please correct me if I am wrong. What I am reading in this thread is that I can change my LS wheel for the SS wheel and have the radio controlls work? I don't have cruise (really bummed about that). Would that make a diff? I was thinking about this when I got the car but I was just going to eliminate the radio and cruise buttons and go with the peices from my LS wheel.

 

Yes you are reading this correctly. I have a no option 2008 LS, that I installed an SS wheel and FUNCTIONAL radio and cruise control into.
