Switching to black trim on the CHEAP

I've seen some sets of black interior trim or the "carbon fiber" looking sets from the G5 go on ebay for over $100 which I think is crazy, so I figured I would just do it on my own for pennies.

Basically what it boils down to for me is $7.00 for a can of Dupli-Color Trim Black paint from Autozone and I bought a dirt cheap black radio and HVAC on ebay that I will just transfer the faceplates over so i don't have to paint those two items. I found an OEM black radio for '07-'09 models on Ebay for $27.00 with free shipping from ebay seller discountoemradios, and I found a brand new OEM black HVAC on ebay for $$39.95 with free shipping from ebay seller qualityoneauto. I'm painting everything else.

I got started today and it's turning out pretty good. The trim black paint leaves a textured look on the plastic and if it doesn't mesh well with the radio and hvac faceplates I may sand down the trim pieces and re-spray them to get them nice and smooth.

Please forgive the dirty interior, it's been over a month since I've vacuumed and dusted the inside of the car. I need new floor mats too!

*does anyone have any tips on removing the radio/cruise control trim pieces on the steering wheel without breaking them? They didn't seem to want to just pop off like the other pieces i removed today.

Anyways I didn't take off the bezel for the radio and hvac or the passenger side trim with the emblem because those will have to come off when the parts from ebay arrive, so I'll do them later.

Nice job, I'm wondering if black plasti dip + the glossifier will be a viable option, especially if you wanted to go back to stock. The plasti dip seems to go on quite smoothly without sanding.

I suppose that's an option if you want to go back to stock, but I don't.

Thanks for the link, I'll check into that the next go-around when I am doing the radio bezel and the passenger side trim.

Its very durable. I used it to change the grill on my truck from gray to black and drove it for 3 yrs before selling it and it never wore off. Plus its not on the switches themsleves just the trim.

Just got done paying for my OEM black HVAC and radio on ebay, and I've edited the original post with prices and ebay sellers in case anyone else is looking for these items.

Like the contrast on those doors! Will sometime swap to red door panels.

I used that same paint on my radio trim and stuff. Worked out great. Looks different than yours though, mine all turned out flat black and smoother...

could have been from spraying it at different temperature. I sprayed mine in 60-ish degree temps whicb may have messed with the finish a little. I can get them smooth with a little more work but the crinkled look kind of matches the dash.

I got the other trim pieces painted except for the steering wheel control bezels, got the radio faceplate swapped out, and went to put in the new hvac and realized it didn't have functional buttons for the max a/c and recirculation. And you can't swap out the functioning buttons from another hvac because of the way they're held into the faceplate....bummers.

I'm trying to see if the ebay seller has one with the buttons that I can exchange it for, so the radio trim will have to come back off eventually. For now this is what it looks like.

Still very tempted to go all black or have the trim pieces wrapped or dipped in carbon fiber. Looks good man! Any pics finished? And did you find a set of tc seats?

I did this to my car about a year ago. I'm redoing 3 pieces today because they chipped after a several months. (Mainly my cruise control trim pieces) super cheap and easy mod.

Best advise for door panels and kick panels? I did the kick panels in plastidip, about 5 coats and it makes it about 2 months for it starts to chip/peel.

I want to do everything black as well including the dash, just not sure if plastidip is a good idea for EVERYTHING.
