I remember GM's Open Air concept.. a Cobalt with a sliding glass roof. It would have been a ****** great idea.. damn.

I actually stumbled upon this thread googling images of convertible and targa balts i have a thread going right now similar to this as i speak..

But in regards to the whole sliding glass roof thing.
What about just taking out the top part of the roof and replacing it with removable glass? i said the same thing in my thread. PANORAMIC sunroof??

Leave all door pillars so your not loosing all the structural integrity and just replacing the actual top of the car?

Have y'all seen the crash test videos of the cobalt to begin with?! In a head on collision it still folds the top in a weird way. Only thing that appears to be a concern with a targa conversion is that the rear portion would come down as if to come in contact with the rear of the drivers head. Or at least into that area.

I honestly think that if it were to be done, you could go in under the car and weld in a big x brace to compensate for the loss in the rigidity of the body by removing the roof. Considering there aren't any companies producing a readily available kit for this, it wouldn't cost that much more to have te bracing done at the same time. I don't know how much room is available under the vehicle for adding extra steel but I know that's basically what they do when they build convertible models of vehicles.
