Wanting to paint my interior trim please help
As the title says i am trying to paint my interior trim. I got it all out of the car. And my first attempt failed horribly. I just sprayed my primer over the metallic paint that it came with from the factory. which went on fine. but then when i sprayed my color it wouldn't stick and just broke apart and looked horrible. So i tried using 320 grit sand paper to sand off all the paint down to the bare plastic and sprayed my primer again. this time you can see scratches from the sand paper through the primer. so as far as im concerned i have ruined the pieces at this time.
so need to buy new ones. but to not ruin the new ones what steps do i need to take to prep the pieces before i paint? or are the ones i have maybe savable if i use a finer grit paper? also do you think it might be the kind of paint i used to spray on the pieces as the reason why it wouldnt bond? i used Dupli-Color DE1640 Plum Purple Engine Spray Paint. The only reason i used that spray was to color match what i painted my valve cover and other engine parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

I don't think you have ruined them at all. I would wetsand the primer coat you put down (that you can see scratches in) with a higher grit paper such as 600 and then shoot another coat of primer on there. Wetsand that coat with 800 and then shoot your colour. I would wetsand the colour wtih 1000 if there are any inperfections and then clearcoat the part. I don't think you need to buy new parts. I think these can be salvaged for far cheaper than what it would cost you to buy new/used ones.

I agree with Allgood i used to paint.... and thats about as good a suggestion as you can get if you can get your hands on the materials however i wouldnt go all the way down to an 800 on sanding your primer u need a VERY slight scratch in ur surface for the paint to adhear well

Use filler primer like allgood said, then wet sand lightly with 400, then wet sand 600, and finally wet sand with 800 till is really smooth and then go over it one more time with 800. Spray down your color (2-3 coats) then wet sand with 1500 lightly, make sure your sand paper doesnt get dry, then clear coat it with another 2-3 coats and your done
