It was long ago suggested that you should raise the armrest for spirited driving. I however have not had this problem and if it really was never supposed to be there why was it in the concept version as well as it having the mounting holes already in place?
I was thinking about getting one back before I got the car. Since I've got it I really haven't felt a need for an armrest, and this is after some lengthy driving too.
Maybe I'll think about it again later. Before I knew about that fold down compartment to the left of the wheel, I wanted it also for more space to put stuff, but that fits my work badge, my pens for work, and my raybands just right

I got the armrest, and at first I wasn't so sure of it and found it a touch akward for driving. Now that I'm used to it, I'm SO glad I got it. I don't even raise it when I want to drive fast, shifting quick is no longer a problem.
Not having an armrest is one thing that really bugs me about this car... I haven't bought one yet but I found it really awkward not having an armrest on the test drive. That and not having a one touch sunroof, I mean honestly my 01 Z24 has a one touch sunroof. Ah well, still really want an SS tho.
Just FYI. I got my 1LT Coupe on Tuesday... it actually had an armrest from the moment I sat in the car. I talked to my co-workers and noone said they installed it when the car arrived. I guess on the '06 model the armrest is standard on manual trans cars.
It really hasn't gotten in the way of my shifting at all. I've ground 3rd once or twice but I'm still getting used to it. The shift cables are much more accurate than I thought they'd be. LOVE the car though.

I can see how it can get in the way though. For best shifting, the armrest should be up due the the shifter coming at a downward angle with the slop of the console. In which case the armrest blocks your arm. With a shorter shifter the console could be somewhat of a problem but not so much with the stock mile high shifter. I dont understand why factory shifters arent short throws. Design it short, you'd think that it'd be cheaper to produce too (less material).
My 06 2.4 has the armrest and its a mess. It sits too far over and rubs against the side supports on the passenger seat every time you flip the seat back to get into the rear. The side support is ripped now (this was only after 5 or 6 times of releasing the seatback). If anyone else has the 06 2.4 you may want to check this out. When I took it to the dealer we looked on the lot at a similar car and it was doing the same thing. The dealer is replacing my seatback and re-installing the armrest.
