My current tune is still my mild 20psi track tune from back in October 2016 when this **** happened at the track.

I'll have to throw my 26psi tune on to do some pulls on video

Finished assembling the AN hoses today. After my turbo feed line fiasco I'm exclusively using Aeroquip TFE racing hose with Aeroquip reusable TFE hose fittings



I'm just needing two more fittings that I just ordered and then I can put it all together and wire up the pump. Should be a pretty neat setup!

Oh and I also mounted the pump in its designated place:

Update time!

The trans cooler is completely installed now. Replaced the trans fluid (I tried but was not able to switch the hose with the drain plug quickly enough so all the trans fluid drained out lol).
Hooked up the electrical connections for the pump today but alas; it appears the Weldon pump is DOA. Just sent a PM to the Ebay seller I got it from and hope to get a replacement soon...

I did run into another issue where the power was cutting out under WOT at various rpms. Will have to record an HPT log tomorrow for ECaulk to take a look at...

Today I was also happily surprised by Jon (sn JKCustoms on here) who was so nice to paint my hood vents the proper way. Wow! Now I just have to decide on the best way of attaching these. Seeing as they need to withstand 140mph speeds at the end of the straight

 

Louvers look great!
Try smacking the pump while powered up. New brush assemblies that sit a while loose a good contact.

Those louvers look sick!!! I love the look and with those retros and tails you just installed your car looks amazing man! I wish I could see it in person. Its one if not my favorite looking cobalt ever!

 

Just in case anyone is trying to track these down, these weren't OEM on the '05-08 FWD V8 Grand Prix GXP as mentioned earlier in the thread. The GXP didn't have hood vents but did have some quasi-functional fender vents.

These part numbers are off the mid/late 90s generation Grand Prix, usually found on the GTP models with the 3.4L Twin Dual Cam V6. Unfortunately they're getting pretty hard to find at salvage yards.

Even rarer would be the larger vents on the '89/90 McLaren Turbo Grand Prix. Another W-body, the Lumina Z34 with the 3.4L V6 also had hood vents but I can't recall off memory if they were functional. They're also pretty tough to find used nowadays.

 

Good info, thanks! Yes, I've been trying to find another set of these louvers since I have two more hoods but they are indeed very hard to find and I've had no luck yet...

^ Those are actually what I am running on my fenders, haha. I have an EVO hood louver on the hood, but these would work to be less...obvious.

Adrian, will be curious to see how well the pump works, as this might be a thing we do for next season.

 

Do you run those in the fender to lessen the air dam behind the tire?

 

Dah. I will get better photos, but we cut and rolled the exits of the fenders behind the wheels and vented the tops of the fenders to help let air and heat out.

 

 

So this thread is also way overdue for an update.

I had mentioned my issues with the Weldon pump not wanting to fire up. I contacted the manufacturer, and when they asked me details about how it was hooked up to the fuel system, and I told them I was actually using it as a pump for transmission cooling, I got an earful that this is a fuel pump and that it is absolutely not suited for pumping hot oil! Their explanation was that the cooling for this pump is provided by the (ambient temperature) fuel running through it, and that running hot oil through it would overheat and break the pump. Well so much for returning it under warranty... The interesting fact here is that Powell has at least one customer with a Cobalt with this exact setup that has been running it for years including track use and apparently it does just fine. Just my luck to get a pump that's DOA...

Anyway, the useful information I got from Weldon was that they actually do have a different pump that is specifically designed to pump very hot oil. I got that one of those now and have just been waiting for a Saturday with decent temperatures to crawl under the car and swap it out. Hopefully this one won't be DOA so I can finally get this project underway. In case anyone is interested in messing with the old fuel pump, I'll gladly send it for free if you pay for shipping. It's a Weldon A600-A and I paid 406 bucks for it.
