Exclamation **URGENT!!** MEDIA ACTION Regarding SYLVAN Meet

Ok I've contacted Global, CTV, the Hearald and will be calling the SUN shortly...

They have asked for me to forward letters that have been sent to the officials as well as the pictures from the day.

I will be doing this tomorrow as I wanted to give everyone a chance to post their letters here and I will then follow up with this tomorrow and submit them all to the agencies.

Please remember these letter MUST BE PROFESSIONAL in nature and Please include how you felt about the officers actions towards you (harassing, beligerent etc.)

What I would like to see this turn into is a story about how Car Enthusiasts are being targeted and harassed for the actions of the other "Ricers" and "Stunt'ers"

Please get back to me as well

***BE AWARE*** I have mentioned that we were there for a small meet and scoping the area out for a potential Western Canadian / US meet location for Spring of next year when this incident occured, so please mention something to that effect should you feel the need.

Thanks guys and if you need a guide line please see KASIOBoy's post:

his letter I just sent to Sylvan Lake By-law municipal enforcement office.

I embelished on the reason we were there just to get the point across.

Subject: A fun day ruined - Cops Kibosh Cobalt Meet 12/08/2007

To whom it may concern

A group from our Calgary and Edmonton car club decided to check out locations for an up-coming meet involving members through out Alberta in which Sylvan Lake and the surrounding area were among our top choices as it is central on the premise of contacting the Town of Sylvan Lake to plan a future event and location.

When they arrived at Sylvan Lake they were profiled and harassed by officer (Dave Kyllio - See officer info below.) from Sylvan Lake police department. I was told that a formal complain was received and that two Cobalt’s were the culprits but no license plate information was available to accurately pinpoint the vehicles involved. The officer then proceeded to hand out citations for various infractions to the owners of the vehicles such as (Parking the wrong way, tinted windows, tinted tail lights, ect.). Yes they did park the wrong way and yes their windows were tinted and such but as this was all going on there were many vehicle with the same infractions parked all around us. So my question to you is. Is he going to ticket all of them too, I think not. Is this the way Sylvan Lake treats it tourists? I surely hope not unless you are trying to get rid of transient tourist just coming down to enjoy the day.

We have since decided that the actions taken by your police detachment and officer were unwarranted and that he singled out, harassed, and humiliated our members. We will find another venue which is less hostile to its tourists. I/we will be sure to pass the events of the day along to the Media, family members, friends, school groups, church groups and anyone else who may be considering Sylvan Lake for a visit as we the public will not tolerate this behavior.

Thanks to the officer for ruining what could/was supposed to be a fun day for all and possibly commerce for your town.

i don't understand the issue here. Unless i am missing something and he verbally/physically harassed you, he did nothing wrong. So what if other people had the same mods and he didn't ticket them? that's like saying, "that guy was street racing too, why doesn't he get a ticket?" All he has to say is he didn't see it. You broke the law and got citations for it, i don't understand what the big deal is. Sorry if i am missing something and the officer did do something wrong, but what i gathered from that letter is the officer came over to your vehicles to see if you were the culprits and ticketed you for the illegal modifications to your car... from the letter it just sounds like he did his job. If this is not the case, i suggest you include more details, but if it is the case, i don't know what you are trying to achieve with these letters.

Personally, I think that this is a waste of time and energy. But you're entitled to do it for whatever reason you like. Good luck either way.

I think this is more of a small town Canada kinda thing. The citations they received were somewhat uncalled for. In a small town of 10,000 people you'd expect the cops to let something like tinted windows to slide. In sure the crime rate in Sylvan Lake is non-existent and for the cop to pick on those guys is excessive.

understand what? I went to the thread. I got an MIP when i was 16 blowing a .034. That is .014 over the legal limit for a minor in michigan, you can blow that much from drinking a glass of wine. That is a total dick move by the cop and alot of people would say he is an ******* and he was an *******, but the fact is i broke the law and he has every right to give me an MIP. You don't see me writing letters to the city about it. Have none of these guys ever met a dick cop before? i'd say 40% of cops are ********, but you only give them power when you get caught breaking the law and these guys broke the law. They got ticketed for breaking the law and unless there was an abuse of power situation or this cop did something illegal, i really dont care what the situation was, quit whining about it and move on. Im not trying to be an ******* here, but come on guys, you can't actually complain about not being let off for breaking the law.

they werent parked illegally.
the guy obviously profiled them because it was a group of similar tuner cars parked together....
and did his best to **** their day up when they were doing nothing wrong.

I dont know how things work down there....but up here basically you wont get in trouble for your tint unless you are doing something stupid like street racing, speeding, etc etc

Cops dont give out tickets for tint just because you have tint.

I agree with cakeeater. I mean not to be a ***** but, you cant expect to go to a car meet and not have police check you all out. Some modifications to cars are legal, some are not, if police believe that there is a chance someone is going to break the law it is there job to be there. Unfortunately it sounds like they were right to check out the meet becuase low and behold people had modifications to their cars that were not legal. I mean a few years back i had no front plate on my car, and I got a ticket for it as I left a local car show, but I didn't write a letter and get all bent out of shape. I mean, I made myself conspicuous and was breaking the law could I expect to happen?? maybe I'm missing something but it sounds like a similar circumstance.

Cool The Situation

You folks aren't seeing the big picture here. We are not trying to **** people off. We are trying to get recognition to the fact that when people take prid in the way thier ride looks, like in this situation in which we were doing nothing but hanging out it was all over board, and like I stated in the letter yes the cop did nothing wrong by issueing the tickets it was the way he went about it. In Alberta yes it is ilegal to have tinted tail lites and yes it is ilegal to tint your side windows but in the most part it is over looked. I have seen many police cruisers with side tinted windows. The other part of the story is we felt singled out because there was a report of two cobalts rippin up the streets of Sylvan but the officer decided it was one of use without proof. (I guess we were in the wrong place at the wrong time) Not to mention the countless cars that were parked all around us with tinted windows and the fact that he would not let us explain that none of the vehicles pressent were involved in that incident. The other thing was was the fact that he was Damb rude.

We here in Calgary have a very good repore with the Police and at our meets they always come around and talk shop and never once have I ever seen a ticket given out for tinting. Now if there is a report of racing or stunting yes they will come and ask questions and take plate numbers and such and rightfully so.

So unless you are going to take the time to read the original post and ask us some intelligent question please do not comment on the situation.

PS thanks PinkStripedCobalt

i guess you didn't read the part of the letter where he says, "yes we were parked the wrong way." . All im saying is you can't expect to be let off for breaking the law. You are LUCKY if you don't get a ticket for tints if they are illegal and the cop that lets it slide is cool, but there is no reason for them not to ticket you. There is a reason certain tints are illegal and when you buy tints you need to realize you are running the risk of getting a ticket and having them removed because they are illegal. Be happy you aren't one of the guys in canada that got their cars crushed just because they were illegally modified. I don't understand what you are trying to get out of writing these letters. You aren't going to get let off, you broke the law. Are you trying to get the cop into trouble?

Well I certainly wish you all the best luck in the world with this but you do realize your painting a BULLSEYE on your cars and yourselves.

Cops can be ****** and cops on a power trip suck but you have to learn how to play the game or you'll get burned in the end.

Be careful and good luck.

keep in mind guys.....
this was a rent-a-cop.....

a bylaw officer....
and even the actual police RCMP were saying he was being a dick, but didnt want to cross boundaries on his tickets.

Bylaw officers are known for being **** about stupid stuff....and having superiority complexes because they arent really a cop.

I had one pull me over cruising at 30km/h for the noise of my GMPP Catback.....

getting a ticket for drugs is way different then getting one for tint man. its a totally different situation when you get pulled over and are a minor under the influence, then it is when your walking back to your car with a cop waiting for you with tickets.

plus when an rcmp officer backs into an angled parking stall right next to us and tells us that were parked illegally and are getting the tickets that the sylvan lake cop was giving us it kind of says "screw you were above everyone else and can do what we want"
