4.45 trans explosion

Well after driving my car only 400 miles it is back in the garage to have the trans taken out again. As I was driving yesterday out of no where I hear a ping and a pang and said well that didn't sound good. I pulled off the road and trans fluid is pouring out like a waterfall. After towing my car home me and a buddy went for a walk where the ping happened. We found 1 bolt. After talking with mongo for a little bit we identified the bolt as the bolt that holds the reverse shaft in place. This bolt backed itself out bounced around the bell housing and then was ejected out of the clutch inspection hole. As far as the damage that was caused I'm not sure yet because don't have the trans out but I do know the pressure plate has some big chunks taken out of it. So here we go pulling it as we speak.

Unfortunately it was I called them the minute that it happened I working with them on a solution. It's technically not they're fault they didn't assemble the trans. There's a shop that they use in the Grand Rapids area for all there transmissions that's whose fault it was this bolt shouldn't have came out there's not loctite on the bolt it's obvious that it wasn't torqued to spec. Makes me thinks more might be loose....

I wonder how did a trans bolt get in the bell housing? There are only three bolts found in the bell housing that are part of the transmission, they hold the TOB in place. Also in the bellhousing are flywheel bolts and there are clutch cover bolts in the same area. The reverse shift mechanism bolt? I wonder how it got there. Sucks to be you. There is no doubt that transmission rebuilds need a lot of care, we do them all the time. And shops can screw up from time to time...good luck.

Pretty awesome when you buy something from a company that slaps basically their label and name on it and they don't warranty or cover anything. They just point fingers. Hope you get it sorted out. If you decide to get another one, I'd recommend a Powell one.

damn.
id expect zzp to work with the other company, and get you a warranty/new tranny

zzp sells them but the other company provides. so a warranty should deff be honored!

Both of you are jumping to the conclusion that zzp is not going to warranty it. How did you both arrive at that?

Im with Dave here. all the OP said is that ZZP outsources the work to a reputable comapny, they have not denied him anything. im sure ZZP will follow up with the Trabns builder and then get back to the OP.

The only big issue is youre now without a car. good luck man, hope it gets taken care of!

ZZP still sells the 4.45 trans? Or is it one of those things if you can come up with the gearset they will do it? Thats just me being curious for future reference.

Sucks though man, but you should be in good hands and I don't think you will be left hanging.

I know someone else on this forum had a stage 2 trans but longer than 400 miles and they said they couldn't do anything cause they outsource them. I wasn't jumping to a conclusion that zzp isn't going to do anything, but he did say it wasn't their fault cause they outsource the trans...

Basically wishing him best of luck with whatever the outcome.

ZZP are good folks honor their work. Tthis time when it's a third-party vendor its very difficult for everyone involved. Labor to remove the trans becomes an issue it's a tough deal. Good Luck

Well I got the trans out and this is what I found. The case is cracked in 4 places can't really see the cracks from the pics.
The big hole is where the bolt was supposed to go most people don't even know its there. ZZP is covering the damage to the case and any internal problems. The clutch disc is fine the pressure plate has some nics in it but is still usable. The flywheel I'm going to have to grind the burrs off the damage and reuse it.
