hey guys i got something for u auto guys. i havent seen this posted b4 so if its a repost sorry. anywayz jbody guys have been using these for years with great results. they increase the line pressure in the trannys and make them shift better. prolly wont feel it to much if ur stock but once u start bumping up the power itll help prevent slippage. its completley plug and play install takes like 5 minutes. they dont specifically have balts listed on there but the 4t45 is on there so im prett sure itll work for yall. happy modding

bumping the line pressure will indeed firm up your shifts, puts a lot of wear on hard parts though. I would find an actual shift kit that modifies the acumulator before using a resistor to fool the tranny into raising the pressure.
i guess people don't read all the info listed on these topics. i have one that i am no longer using if some one wants it i will sell it for 50.00 plus the shipping.

Stay away from "Auto Trans Interceptors" like the plague. They cause nothing but problems!
If the 4T45 is anything like the 4T65E, the "Auto Trans Interceptor" could cause severe problems with the transmission's ability to shift properly.
Coming from the Grand Prix community, they have been out for about 6 years for us and are virtually worhtless. People have tried them, and then got rid of them just as quickly as they bought them. They just don't work.
If you want to improve shifts, you have to do it mechanically by either: a shift kit, bigger transmission pump, better solenoids, improved valve bodies, or more clutch material/wave plates.
You can also accomplish this by a reprogrammed PCM that adjusts the values in the computer.
These "Auto Trans Interceptors" are about as effective as the "Tornado Air Intake". Completely smoke and mirrors!

The both are derrivatives of the Hydramatic series from GM (4T_5 family), right?
IIRC, the race Cobalts use the 4T65E-HD as the transmission (heavily modified internally, of course), so we know that they bolt up to the Ecotec motors, right?
In fact, the GM Torsen differential (not the Quaife) used in the race cobalts is a direct swap into the Grand Prix's 4T65E-HD transmission as long as you use the 3.29 ratio version.
These transmissions, although not identical, are at least "kissing cousins".
The point wasn't if these transmissions are similar or not, it was that I was trying to save someone from making a big mistake by purchasing an "Auto Trans Interceptor" based on many years of past experience with similar situations. There are better solutions out there....it may take some time, however.
Has someone tried to contact TransGo about developing a shift kit for these cars (they have a very good reputation among the GP community)? That should be the first start if you want to improve shifts. Bet one could be put together for under $100.

You bring up some valid points about the differences. However, I believe (I may be wrong here), that if you want to improve shifts it is better and more durable to do it mechanically first. I would recommend a shift kit before any electronic gizmo anyday.
I have over 60,000 mles on my shift kit in my GP. I am putting out approx 320 horse with about 400 ft-lbs torque (calculated at the crank), and I still can bark second at will, lite them up on a 30mph roll downshift (2-1) and it shifts hard as hell. I am not light on this car (as no one should be with a supercharged car
), and it has held together so far. The 4t65E's are known to grenade with about that much power. Sometimes with much less power too. GM rates their max torque at about 280 ft-lbs. That is what the motor puts out when it leaves the factory
No factor of safety what-so-ever.
I am a firm believer that my shift kit, along with a trans cooler, are the only things holding it together.
We will find out shortly next spring how much more it will take when I add some more power.

Regarding the 65e's PCM:
They are not picky at all. All parameters can be changed/accessed. All you need is something like a DHP Powertuner or an HP Tuners software suite, a laptop, and some know-how. True, the PCM does have some torque management parameters that you need to know what you are doing when changing, but not any more than any other car with an automatic transmission. You can change shift points, account for gears, change line pressure, adjust the rev limiter, etc... very easily.
The transmission, itself, is the picky part of the equation.

Again i had this on my alero as well as many other people on the alero boards. the 4t45e is rated to handle 300ft lbs unless that has changed my alero was put 325 to the ground with 300 hp. i too was very hard on my car and i never had any problems with the tranny while i had this installed. i did however put and addtional tranny cooler on as well, which is always highly recommended when doing hard driving like this.
Trans go does not offer a kit either"no intrest in this tranny" i tried that route as well when i had the alero. the olny kit that is out the is B&M they have a kit for i think it was 49.95 or something like that. people also had real good luck with it.
it all just boils down too how much do you want to spend, how much do you want to work at the install, and how much power are you going to add.
