Automatic drivetrain problem

Got a friend with an auto trans who stopped at a red light and the car would no longer move. He can put it back in park and the car wont roll anywhere. But the car wont drive anywhere once in any gear. Any ideas?

it could be a number of things. lost all the fluid, stripped input shaft or pump shaft, damaged pump, broken feed pipes, broken accumulator, or damage clutch piston seals. basicly its going to need an overhaul or replacment.

there isnt really much you can do to check the pump, and honestly its an unlikely part to fail on the 4t45e.

Just buy a used trans off ebay and save the hassle lol there's half a million of them for less than 300 and chances are there is probably even one in a junkyard around you

Turned out to be the pump. I should have mentioned its on a ford windstar lol. I was just searching for some general knowledge in automatci trans to see where I should start checking first. the trans fluid was checked before start up while cold 3 times. then we cranked it up and checked it again 3 times. The fluid levels never moved which tells me the pump aint pumping.

its more than likely a broken pump shaft thats causing the problem. its somewhat common for those transmissions, however in some cases it can be quite catastrophic.
