Bad bearing in the tranny? HELP! :(
Bad bearing in the tranny? HELP! :(
So there's a problem with my LNF.. The tranny is making a weird noise.. as the sound is not gear dependent, doesn't change with engine speed, its consistent with wheel speed - and not a wheel bearing. I believe that it's the bearing(s) in the output shaft..
So my question is...
Could I be wrong?
How many bearings are in there?
How hard are they to swap with new ones?

removing and stripping a transmission is a lot of work. There are many bearings in the transmission. Its unlikely that you could pinpoint a bad bearing in your transmission, but its possible.
You say its not the wheel bearing? Not sure why. New wheel bearings will fail if the bearing/axle nut is overtorqued. 159 ft lbs is the torque on an LNF for the axle nut, using an air tool to tighten it will possibly lead to premature wheel bearing failure.

The reason why I know it's neither of the wheel bearing is because I've tested it. I raised the car from each side, and since I don't have the G85 option, it would mean that I don't have LSD. So slowly, I put the car in 1st gear and let one wheel spin. the sound came as soon as I hit like 3-5 mph.. Both times on different sides, sounded exactly the same..
