battery suggestions??

okay, me thinks that my battery is starting to go south on me, any suggestions of what specific battery to purchase?

or, at the very least, can someone help me decipher the group size so that i can find a replacement? i cannot find that information anywhere.

i've always had optima batteries before and have been pretty pleased, but their website is less than informative.

The stock battery is a little funky in size, but it's a group 34. Optima group 34 batteries will fit in there, but they're taller than the stock battery, so your carpet in the back of the trunk will stick up. That's why a lot of batteries do not list the cobalt in their fitment lists.

The NGT Extreme battery from Carquest is a nice AGM battery. Their specs are better than an Optima, and they're cheaper. I personally have a Die Hard Platinum, since I don't have any Carquest stores near me. I paid an arm and a leg for it, but the Sears warranty on Die Hard batteries is nice. 4 year replacement. Both of those batteries will cause the carpet in the back of your trunk to stick up.

instead of guessing it needs a battery, have it tested, i love reading threads where people shotgun parts at a car, then get pissed when it doesnt fix their problem

well, yes, i do understand that.

you're right, but my trickle charger is already indicating that it's bad. while that's not the be-all and end-all of battery testing, i do plan to take it in.

that said, i'm not gonna take it out of the car, and truck myself an hour into town without having an idea where to get one if it is, in fact, bad.

I'm using an optima yellow top and it's actually about 1/2" shorter than the original battery but the other dimensions are roughly the same. It has both side and top posts and has no issues clearing the carpet cover.

Huh, Well I'll be. I was told it would push the carpet up in the back. I stand corrected.

I almost went with a Yellow top, but I had heard about some quality issues with Optima batteries. Lots of people replacing theirs 3 or 4 times in a couple of years. However, for as many bad stories, I heard just as many good stories about them. In the end, I decided with all the trouble I was having, it wasn't worth the gamble for me, and I went with the Die Hard Platinum battery, which I had rarely seen anything bad about. It (Die Hard Plat) does push the carpet up in the back, but I plan on building a subfloor in my trunk with a hinged door for the spare tire well anyway, since a water leak basically soaked the entire trunk during a heavy 3 day rain back when I first got my car, so the pushed up carpet will be gone eventually anyway.

actually, i sat for like a minute trying to decide where it should go.

the eventual idea was that the battery is a service item that is replaced under regular use, so drivetrain seemed logical.

problems and service was another, but it's not really a "problem" like, "OMG, what do i do? helpz me cobalt.net"

about 5 years ago i put an optima red top in my 86 cavy, never gave me an issue. after i got the cobalt, it was clear it wouldnt fit (a full size optima, not a small one) so i sold it and its still going strong. however that was before optima stuff started going downhill. a friend of mine had a yellow top that lasted him 4 years, figured that was average and got another one. in a year he went through 5 batteries, finally got them to give him a red top instead. its doing alright, been about 6 months.

i know a lot of other people with issues with optimas, id just stay away from them now.

hey Joe you did all right dont worry about it and its a good thread with good information. I am always an OEM type guy when it comes to batteries, but for the race cars including time attack we used a lighweight hawker energy Odyssey PC 925 i still have two cars running with them since 2006... for the Corvettes racing we use OEM they seem to hang in well and there are a ton of electronics to worry about you need a good battery...

that's kind of my opinion, although, that proves to be difficult in my area, no one seems to have one, including dealers, and the shipping to special order it is a fortune.

i'm just gonna buy a cheapie from wal mart.
