Yes they can. GM can void your transmissions warrenty for useing aftermarket wheels. Aslo bearings, hubs, axles, mounts, ABS sensors, the list goes on. But that doesn't stop people from running aftermarket wheels does it? Look a TSB exists specifing how they WILL void your engine warrenty. So like I said, Why risk it? You can buy AC filters at other places then the dealership and they cost about the same, so again why run the risk?

This bulletin is being updated to include additional information on incorrect or improperly installed engine oil filters. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-06-01-016 (Section 06 -- Engine/Propulsion System).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Important: Engine damage that is the result of an incorrect or improperly installed engine oil filter is not a warrantable claim. The best way to avoid oil filter quality concerns is to purchase ACDelcoŽ oil filters directly from GMSPO.

Oil filter misapplication may cause abnormal engine noise or internal damage. Always utilize the most recent parts information to ensure the correct part number filter is installed when replacing oil filters. Do not rely on physical dimensions alone. Counterfeit copies of name brand parts have been discovered in some aftermarket parts systems. Always ensure the parts you install are from a trusted source. Improper oil filter installation may result in catastrophic engine damage.

Refer to the appropriate Service Information (SI) installation instructions when replacing any oil filter and pay particular attention to procedures for proper cartridge filter element alignment. If the diagnostics in SI (Engine Mechanical) lead to the oil filter as the cause of the internal engine noise or damage, dealers should submit a field product report. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-00-89-002F (Information for Dealers on How to Submit a Field Product Report).

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
On rare occasions, a low oil pressure light may be experienced shortly after an oil change due to a damaged oil filter.

Recommendation/Instructions:
If this is encountered, remove the oil filter and inspect the filter nipple that seats in the oil filter housing portion of the engine block. If the oil filter nipple is damaged, mis-positioned, or crushed, replace the oil filter with an OEM oil filter and evaluate the concern.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed

This sounds like the main issue is improper installation of the filter, ie, forgetting to lube the O-ring on the filter nipple. Sure, I could see it happening more often using Ebay Chinese-made knockoffs, but any quality aftermarket filter should be fine if you lube the O-ring (does the How-to on this site even mention to do that?). I'll keep using the Pure Ones I mentioned earlier, thank you. I don't anticipate any problems.

AC-Delco here, worked fine for over 100k miles, so far.

crate engine depot has good prices on them, although i've been getting mine through a local dealer. take the CED price in, and typically they'll match it, or at least come close (especially if you can get them to ignore shipping). on a newer car, you also have the benefit of them seeing that you try to take to care of your car, maybe leading to less arguments if you need warranty work.

as far as frams go, their traditional, canister filters are, for the most part, absolute crap. open one up one time, and compare the inside to an OEM filter. my favorite has always been the cardboard end caps, instead of the much sturdier metal caps. leads to a lot of blown filters on startup. for our cars, the only place they could really cheap out is on the filter media itself - my guess is they did.

even at list, a delco filter at my local dealer is the same price as walmart sells a fram for.

not our particular filter, but a good read anyway: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oil...reference.html

I'm using Bosch right now, seems to do alright.

I'll either be going with OEM, Wix, or PureOne next change.

That's an entirely different subject. Castrol Edge meets the most GM requirements. Don't even start preaching the Mobil 1 bullshit.

For my filters, ACDelco, always.

Use Edge or Mobil 1 Extended Performance if you're under warranty.

Otherwise I would recommend this:

I understand the GM Tech's position, but that is the SAME with every OEM and not just GM. The key is to find a dealership that isn't run by a bunch of morons. There are Ford dealerships that will warranty Mustangs with aftermarket mods as long as they're not related to the issue at hand. The Magnusson-Moss act is pretty clear, the burden is on GM to prove that your aftermarket replacement filter was cause for engine failure - not because you used a non-OEM part - unfortunately that can require costly/lengthy litigation.

THAT SAID, I actually use AC Delco parts on my Ford cars, specifically brake pads, rotors, and other replacement parts. I'm running the Delco police pads on the front of my 2000 Crown Vic with Delco durastop pads for the rear (no police pads are available for my rear calipers).

You can buy the AC Delco oil filter here:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,5340

5% discount codes can be found in many places for RockAuto. If you're having trouble finding one, this one expires 6/19/09 (unlimited use): C19735E35B0C
Just enter that at the bottom where it says "How did you hear about us" in the checkout process

The Hengst filter (A German company, but the Ecotec filter is made in the US and sold in the AC Delco box) looks to be a nice quality filter. I've been buying up every filter I can find for the Ecotec under every different brand and parts store and should have a nice comparison thread posted up within the next couple months. Many of them are made by the same manufacturer but there are some small differences in construction and filtration media.

I personally have been using the Purolator PureONE cartridge the last couple oil changes as their synthetic media normally provides some of the best filtration qualities. I should have some used oil analysis results soon to verify that compared to the factory OEM Hengst filter.

*Also if an admin catches it, this thread should probably be moved to the correct section.
