Broken shifter clip
Broken shifter clip
I was backing out of my parking spot at work and the shifter just went floppy. Took the dash apart and found the driver side shifter cable clip was junk. And of course it completely broke trying to remove it. Why GM's engineers thought plastic was the answer is beyond me. So right now it's only got 4th gear. Ever try launching in 4th??
So here's the clip that's missing (circled)

I can't find a GM part number for the clip that holds the cable tight. I know TWM makes the aluminum replacement for $90, but that's not the one that broke on mine. I could find a clip from a junk yard card, but it will likely just break again. I know I'm not giving GM another $300+ for a replacement shifter assembly with more plastic clips. So is there a replacement GM part or do I need to fabricate something??

you're out of luck on this one. had the same thing happen to me, just the other clip, and you can't get just that part separate. is your car still under warranty? i never got around to finding out if that assembly is covered under powertrain, but it's possible. in the meantime, those cables come through the cupholder... i got pretty good at just pulling/pushing the cable to shift
I definitely am not under warranty anymore, it's an 06.
I bought the TWR aluminum clamp for the side that wasn't broken, and put the top clip off the good side on the driver side clip. Only problem is the TWR clamp kinda sucks if you're using it on the stock shifter because of clearance issues. I should have just made my own cable clamp out of scrap metal and bolts and called it a day.

that's a good thought. i did the same thing, and yeah, it does blow trying to get a little allen wrench or something down there. first time i tried it, i didn't get them all tight and pulled the clip right off the cable. nothing quite like doing a job twice
