Can a 2.2 automatic bolt up to a 2.0 engine?
The j-body cars used 4t40's. The deltas use 4t45e's. The whitfield car uses a 4t60. The bellhousings on the LSJ and L61 are indentical. The trans would bolt up just fine. You would not be able to use it however. The 4t45e is an electronically controlled trans. The PCM in the CobaltSS is able to control a trans, but isn't programmed to do so. The trans equipped cobalts use separate engine controls and trans controls.
The GM Ecotec drag build book says that they use a 4T65-EHD out of a W-Body and convert it to a 3-speed in the 1300hp drag car.
The PCM has coding in there for all three transmissions (the 2 manuals and the automatic), GM does it that way for whatever reason. Funny thing is the Grand Prix PCM has coding to run a Getrag 5-speed in it too. You just need HP Tuners to open and activate the table in there for the automatic.
I think it would make an interesting swap, since that means that us 'matic SS owners (of the 2.4L variety) could swap in an LSJ powerplant too!
