Do I really need a 3" inch exhaust?

I have a 07 ss/sc with tons of mods. One of these mods is full 3" exhaust which consists of a Clear image 1.75" primary mid length header with 3" high flow cat back and magnaflow muffler. THIS SET UP IS TOO LOUD!!!!!!!! I was thinking about going back down to a 2.5" cat back for sound reduction purposes. A 2.5" resonator has room for more packing and same with the 2.5" muffler. I guess my main question is: How much hp can a 2.5" cat back handle? Will I loose power or is 3" over kill for our cars anyways?

What are your mods.

In most cases a 2.5" catback will flow more than enough for 90% of the SS/SC's on this site.

2.5 should be good. although if you plan on going overboard with mods a 3" isn't bad.

You will not notice a loss in power switching to a 2.5" catback with that setup. A 2.5" catback is good at two things, exhaust gas velocity & flow. If you arent flowing enough air you will have decreased exhaust gas velocity with a 3" catback. Most people on this site do not understand the concept of exhaust gas velocity very well, and think bigger is always better.

The only other mods I was thinking of is that tvs blower and some 72's or 80's.

had a magnaflow then switched to dynomax VT (valve technology) series. The VT series helped quiet it down at idle and under very lilttle power. But once you give it a little juice and that valve opens up, it's just as loud as the magnaflow.

I don't think that just changing the muffler would help him lol. If he wanted to change the sound then yes. For better flow, no.

Not necessarily looking for better flow. Would like to quiet it down but still have enough flow

Yea I posted before I read it all haha. If you go with 3 inch I hear good things about the dynomax super turbo muffler(I think that's what it's called). But idk if it is available in 3 inch version.

Look into a dynomax super turbo muffler (i believe thats the name). They are very quiet, and flow very well.

Having a quieter muffler will help alot.. Saying if he had a 40 series and switched to a super turbo muffler it will queit it WAY down

You could always add another resonator. But I think the best bet would be the muffler as myself and Staged07SS stated above.

Does the dynomax super turbo still flow enough for the tvs blower upgrade i am considering?

I believe it is a straight through design muffler and if it is then I wouldn't see why not.

If you're not tvs or turbo swapped, 3" is unnecessary.

Does anyone else think that a full 3" exhaust with a header and magnaflow muffler is too loud or is it me?

I got the Dynomax Superturbo muffler and it works GREAT. Much quieter than the magnaflow or the dynomax vt series but not too quiet. You can still hear the exhaust well but it has a deeper less harsh tone. Also I did not loose ANY power!! Ran a 13.15 @ 114 before the muffler swap and ran the exact same time and mph after the swap. The superturbo get the 2 thumbs and the 2 big toes up from me. 1/4 time and mph via aeroforce interceptor scan gauge.
