F23 Trans Removal
F23 Trans Removal
Hey all. Used to be a member here a few years back, but created a new account for this since I don't have access to it. That said...here I am.
I'm in the process of removing the transmission as it locked in a gear despite me being able to shift it and is grinding something nasty anytime my foot isn't buried into the clutch pedal. I talked to a couple mechanics who specialize in delta platform cars and they all say its either the shift fork(s) or some pin that broke and dropped. Either way, trans is grenaded.
I have the top 4 trans bolts out, along with the mounts removed. I also have the shift assembly removed from the transmission as well as whatever electrical stuff was on top of the trans. I'll be tackling the bottom half tomorrow being the axles (which I loathe removing), the bottom bolts, and whatever else needs done. My question is what else needs removed to make this an easy swap out? I figure the subframe needs taken off so it'll fit through. Do I need to remove like the starter or anything?
For the record, its an 06 Ion 2.4L LE5 5-speed. Getrag F23-M86. Stock clutch at 80000 miles and it bites fine. I tried taking it to shops and all want to replace the clutch as well despite my reassurance it is in great condition. Ugh. I'm just trying to get it sellable.
Thanks in advance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldnt have to take the starter out, use a nice size prybar, axles will pop right out. I'd replace the clutch while in there, that's a lot of the miles on the stock clutch, new clutch master cylinder too. Have any questions you can text me 219 707 3457 names Lee, I just did my car, so its all fresh in my head
In the process of jacking the car a few feet in the air, I notice the coolant is pouring out of the radiator. I look under to discover a gash in it and some bent pieces. Time for a new one...ugh.
I figure it comes out as part of the trans removal anyway since I don't have zipties to hold it.

You've pretty much thought of everything that needs taken out to get the trans out. Subframe does have to come out and as stated, the axles come out really easy with a prybar. Don't replace the master cylinder unless you have had issues with it. However, you should replace the slave cylinder in the bell housing while you have it all apart.
