Help me diagnose a grinding noise while braking

This is weird. 2006 2.4SS with 60,000 miles. When I brake I hear a grinding sound from the front. Thinking it was time for new brakes I changed the linings. The old linings still had a little left but it was definitely time to change them. I did not turn/replace the rotors because they looked great with no grooves or other problems. The noise seemed to go away for a day or two but now it's back. Has anyone had this issue and what did you do?
I am going to pull the rotors off this weekend but wanted the opinions/experience from you guys.
Thanks
John

If you are experiencing a noise only while breaking it most likely going to the be an issue with either the rotor or pads. Is there any pulsation going on in the pedal or anything?

Nope pedal is fine. I think it may be a front hub/bearing assembly. I'm going to take it apart tomorrow and check it out.

I pulled the bearing hubs and they seem fine without a load on them. I think i will put new rotors on it first. The hubs were easy to take off so if it turns out to be them it won't take long to do it again.

What you might not realize is that rotors are very temperamental and anything can make them squeak and grind.

brant - good call. I changed them and all is good
I just did a brake job a month ago and had my rotors (original) turned at that time. They were within spec so I don't know why they were making the noise........oh well, it's fixed and now I don't have to worry.
Thanks everyone.

Yup - been wrenching on my own cars for 30 years. Just when you think you know alot you learn something new.

Of course! Theres almost too much stuff coming out now a days for cars to keep track of lol. Rotors now they say you shouldn't even really bother turning them, its normally cheaper to just buy new ones when doing a brake job.

I know this thread is dead, and has been dead for a long time now, but I'm experiencing the same thing, but I do have something like a pulsation going on with my break pedal... The noise only happens at rrly low speeds to, other then that, nothing..... Sorry for waking the thread, I was just looking for some help b4 I spend a lot of money I don't rrly have.

If you are getting a vibration during breaking it will most likely be related to a warped rotor or uneven wear in the pads. When was the last time you had your brakes checked/done?
