Ingalls ETD acting a bit funny

hi all, i just got one from Cobalt Addiction. They are based in Deer Park which is about 20 minutes from me so i got it locally.

Anyways, I put it in, it's set to 12mm (10-15 is the adjustment) so it's set at about medium stiffness. Wheel hop is gone, and i'm relieved, but...

in any gear, 1st-5th, between 1800rpms and about 2200 rpms i get a strange rattling noise from the dampener ONLY when applying moderate throttle. light throttle to no throttle, the problem ceasts to exist. i'm going to take it out tomorrow, leaving the brackets in place. (which were properly torqued down to spec settings using tools from my automotive enginnering class)

If the sound stays, then i can just take the brackets off drive it to GM and get it fixed under warantee but if it stays, then wtf? any1 that has one or knows about them know why it rattles and why at a specific range? i can imagine that rpm range is a specific vibration frequency that is in sync with whatever is rattling causing the sound to be heard only then, but i have no idea what to do.

It is adjusted perfectly to 12mm. the bolts on the "stiffy" are torqued exactly to spec, and the length is a perfect fit due to fiddling around with it for 45 or so in class with my auto professor at my side. and yes i used the rubber grommets, or o-rings whatever u wanna call the lil rubber spacers. the bolts are all installed in the correct direction. the install is as perfect as could be. the brackets are aligned nicely, everything seems to be just fine...

should i use different o-rings? any tricks to get rid of the sound? i'll take it out tomorrow to see, but the sound started only about 2 hours into having it installed so i feel it's definately the ETD... i'm completely stuck (until tomorrow when i get the chance to remove it)

any/all help is appreciated, thanks

yea so i took it off, the noise was gone. it's the ingalls.

after making sure everything was tight and installed properly, i set the adjustment for 11mm and put it back in with better o-rings i got from class. the noise is very subtle now, but it still makes a noise from around 2000 to 2200 now less of a range and less noise but i hear it. it's no big deal, but it sounds a bit cheesy, like something is loose under the hood.

any suggestions to get rid of the noise??

u may just be hearing the dampner just doing its job. not sure though. I notice a lot of noise/ vibes with my ingalls and tranny mounts.

perhaps the noise i am hearing is the dampener doing its job... but i don't know if i like the sound. it's a wierd noise, though very subtle.

papasmurf, you said you noticed vibes of course with ingalls and tranny mounts, but what noises do you have? anything like i have with a rattling?

any1 else with tranny/engine mounts with additional noises that weren't there stock? i wan't to know if i should sell the ingalls and go with the turbotech racing urathane mounts (after i bring the 'balt into chevy and have them check out a vent leak; when i'm crusing i feel like i have the vents on half power even when the blower is off) or if i should just keep it.

any/all comments appreciated. tia

Not normal because I have mine set as tight as it will go and theres no rattling noises. If the TD is installed properly there shouldn't be any rattling coming from it. Perhaps something else other than the TD is rattling from the vibes it gives off?

hmm, good point chris. funny thing is tho after removing it completely and leaving just the brackets the noise is gone... so yea perhaps once it's in, the added stiffness of the motor is transfering the vibes to something else.

if i get the chance to, there's a dyno @ my school but it isn't working. the part that the tires go on and spin still works, it just doesn't read output, perhaps i can use that sometime when there's no other classes in that room. till then, i'm still hunting for the sound.

i'm going to set it to 10mm tomorrow and retighten and install it, see if that does anything. seems that every1 that puts these in puts it to 10mm if they want to see real gains. the vibes are actually pleasant to me. (doing that cuz i got a tiiiiny bit of wheel hop tonight launching @ 2000rpms to get around a caddy cts that tried to deny me access to the expressway on ramp. muahahha no match for the balt =P)

til then i g2 deal with tha damn noise. it's driving me crazy!!

woah, thats scary. mine's an '07 w/ 13k miles on it, i'd doubt it's the chain but, i am in the near future (when i get a chance between school and work) taking the dampener off and bringing it into chevy to have them fix a few interior rattles i hear. i'll have em take a look under the hood and make sure everything is cake.

when i get it back i'll throw the dampener back on and see if it comes back. if it still rattles, it's prop my install somehow.

** i noticed when i tighten the nut and bolt holding the dampener to the brackets, that the helm joint is actually pressing into the brackets a very shallow depth (talkin couple 1/100ths of a mm) and when the bolts are fairly tight but not tight enough, i can actually move the ETD and simulate the noise! gonna sand the brackets down a bit, replace and see if it goes away. perhaps i weas tightening them too much and caused the joint to crus the bracket a bit and then it rattles in the recess!!! **

when i do that tomorrow, i'll post about it. if it works, it will be a good piece of info for any1 with a similar problem. though it looks like i'm the only one

so that i can finally end this post (even though it's old) just for informational purposes, i still haven't solved my problem. i'm going to go ahead and take the blame away from the ETD though considering the other day i took off at moderate throttle b4 the car was warmed up all the way and i heard a rattle @ the same rpm. probably a heat shield or who knows what.

Still get a bit of wheel hop though. gonna go with the poly mount & bushings come the summer time. any1 interested in a used ingalls PM me.

Very interesting post.. I too am having some issues with a 'rattle' noise from my ingalls which I installed the same time I installed a CAI.. it's very definately coming from teh right side of the engine and only noticeable at certain times.

I'm not likeing it, but will try to adjust it a bit to see if that helps.. thanks for posting this information!

This is what we hear all the time, the ingalls is metal on metal technically, frame to engine... So you get a lot of noise.

Customers then get the Turbo Tech Racing Upper mount, and love the difference.
