So since I'm not sure what it exactly could be, I'll post it here. I have a 2007 LS and My key gets stuck in the ignition EVERY time. Also, I can shift gears without even pressing the button and this is dangerous sometimes because my elbow has bumped my shifter a few times and I went into incline lmao.

When i went to have my power steering recall done the techs just wrote "key stuck in ignition" well no crap but WHY! Some people said its the whole shifter assembly that needs to be done.

 

Idk, but my granny has an ls with the same problem lol, If you pop the plastic piece off of the bottom of the steering column there is a small metal pin that if you push it in, it will release the key.. I know it sounds retarded, but gm dealer didnt know **** about fixing it so that is all i could come up with.

Hasen't happened to me either. But I've seen tons of threads about this in the last year and a half I've been here.

 

Idk, but my driver side door handles chrome tape or w.e is coming off.. pretty upset about that.

 

My chrome still looks good. Paint is chipping on the radio buttons, and the plastic bezels around the door buttons.

 

My paint was coming off to. So I just repainted the interior all black, Looks better imo

 

That's my plan too. I want to paint it real glossy. I've seen it done, but I don't remember who did it.

 

try forcing the steering wheel left or right while trying to remove the key.

 

I've been doing the whole "push the pin and release the key" for an entire year now lol. We bought the car privately and the guy is a car mechanic himself so might as well take it to him.

 

Same thing happened to me i had my shifter assembly and key tumbler replaced

 

Nice! Good to know that its most likely what you had said. Also, anybody know how much a control arm bushing replacement usually costs??

 

Dealership is probably gonna screw you for $440 for the entire control arm assembly just like they did to me...

 

my did the same, used the button thing for a while but mine was still under warranty so dealer fixed her up for me

 

there is part in the shifter assembly that detects when you are in park and lets the key go to off and come out of the tumbler. That broke and came out so my shifter would be in park but would not be detected so the key would get stuck and in the process i fucked up my tumbler trying to get the key out


its a common problem in cobalts

 

Im just tryin to get her fixed up because I plan on selling later in the year.

I hate to bump such an old thread, but since I could be very well selling this car soon, I'd like to get this problem fixed.

I've been pressing the little white release button in the steering column for over 10 months now lol, and its become such a habit that I accidentally try to do it in other peoples cars as well only to bump my thumb on the column.

Anyway, the deal is that the person we bought the car from says we have a warranty with him for 3 years or 70,000 miles, so I'm at 69.5k miles right now... but the catch is that no matter what theres a 300 dollar deductible. How much does the shifter assembly replacement usually cost? If its in the ballpark of 300-400, i rather have a GM trained tech do it than some guy that sold me the cobalt lmao.

 

I have this issue with my girlfriends Redline. Saturns are far more NOTORIOUS for this issue. People said push the pin to release it, but on our Redline, I took out the cylinder(easy as pie) and then wrapped masking tape around it and shoved it back in. Like NEW, except now it just turns rough. I know I could buy a new key cyl but it works fine with my taping

 

Call a chevy dealership.. ask for parts.. give them last 8 of your VIN and go from there?? There MAY be something available aftermarket at your local parts store.
