Lost 2nd and 5th Gear
Lost 2nd and 5th Gear
Hey all, I was driving home yesterday and when I went to shift into 2nd it went limp and ground. I pushed in the clutch and slowed down and was able to shift to 1st no problem, went to shift into second and it did the same thing, so I shifted into 3rd no problem, then 4th. I then shifted into 5th and as I was going downhill it just came out of gear. Trying to shift back into 5th I'm met with really hard resistance and it just won't go. So now I have a 2nd gear which grinds each time you shift into it and a 5th gear that doesn't function anymore. Any ideas as to what it might be? I know I could use new fluid as it's due for a change but did I lose some syncros or is my transmission detonating?

Unfortunately at this mileage there are so many variables. Yes the synchros could be shot, but the brake fluid loss will be a huge factory, if something is leaking in the clutch hydraulic circuit than that will hinder performance, the clutch could be going but that would affect all gears. Shifter cables are a possibility as they are cheaply made and could be messed up. Process of elimination. Figure out where the brake fluid is going first, if nothing is leaking with the clutch then I would try to put it into gear with engine off, if it goes in perfectly fine than it could be the clutch dragging or synchro. If it still fights even with the engine off then I would suspect the cables. I've put 3 new clutches in mine and a new set of cables since I owned it. Yes I know how drive and no I don't beat it. Was using clutch masters and found out the clutches were not great and the rivets kept falling out the hat, manufacturer defect.

I would try replacing the trans fluid as kind of a hail Mary last resort but it sounds like your trans is beat. Probably going to have to end up pulling it out and sending it out to get rebuilt and you may as well do a clutch and flywheel and throughout bearing while your at it. Kind of weird that it's 2nd and 5th at the same time but in the same token everything has the same age and mileage
