LSD Install?

I'm going to buy the quaife LSD soon, now that the price is lowered to $1000.
Has anyone installed a LSD in a non-g85 car yet? What's all involved in the install. I've seen GTP owners install them with the tranny still in the car, is that possible with the lsj?

Thanks for any insight, Hoping to do this install my self, unless the tranny has to be pulled, and the case split.

Here pics of the ss/sc Tranny, if someone could cirlce some of the parts, or where it goes, that would also help.

It needs to be pulled and split with both shafts removed to the best of my knowledge. Most transmission shops will refuse to do them. Most dealers will put it back together wrong as well.

I had my transmission out from pulling the engine. I took it to my dealer and they installed the Quaife no problem. They did need to get some tool which they didn't have and a gasket had to be ordered too. Other than that there was no problem. I had them give me a price before hand and made them honor that price when they were over on the time. My dealership has a mechanic who specializes in transmissions. I did have another manual transmission shop say they would do it, but because they hadn't done the MU3 before, they weren't quoting a price.
You do not want to do this your self.

If your willing to pay for the labor and drive to the buffalo NY area.....I know a guy who will more than likely be willing to do the labor.....he charges $60 a hour for his labor, but I watched him dis-assemble a non lsd tranny today and install a JDM LSD into the same tranny today......I would assume you'd be without your car for a few days though....might as well do the clutch while your tranny is out of the car too If you want PM me and I can give you his number....

The LSD install on an already removed transmission was $675. at the dealership. I had checked another place but because most shops haven't done these transmission the price is high. It may be possible to get a better price from someone who specializes in Saab's.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if at all possible, you're going to pay WAY less to just get a full tranny with LSD already installed. They can be had from junkyards or WHEREVER. Someone posted up a few weeks ago about getting their hands on the G85 tranny out of a rear-ended SS for a little under $700 shipped. MUCH easier to pully a tranny and put a new one in than it is to try and have one installed. MUCH lower risk of anything going wrong or long term damage due to a botched install.

I have been looking and can't find one. If you know where one is for less than 1000 post send me a PM and it is as good as sold.

I also agree with you about the less risk. But lets think about it. My car has 11000 miles on it. I have owned it since new. My car is not in a yard or being parted out.

Those cars are in yards for a reason. I may not be willing to take the chance on a yard transmission simply because anyone can screw up a manual transmission through abuse.

I have been looking with not luck.

I have been looking for one for a couple of weeks. My clutch should be here in a couple of weeks. If I don't have one by then I can get the LSD from quaife in 4 days.

If someone can find one I am willing to pay a finders fee. It just depends on the price of the transmission, mileage, etc.

Yes, but I am not doing th install. My friend is doing it and he is the head mechanic at a shop. He does all my work on the side at a price I can't beat.

When I told him about the clucth he could get it done in a couple of hours. When I told him about the LSD he said "Ernie you worry to much." I do worry cause this is my car. I just want to make sure he knows what he is getting into.

If he has done tranny work it wont be a problem. There are a few tools required that are special though.

He looked at the install book time whatever computer today. He said that it looks like a normal transmission and that the install looked pretty straight forward. He said that he should be able to make do on the specail tools.

But for my sake what are the tools that he will need?

Theres a tool to press out the input and counter shafts.. aswell as a tool to hold the shafts in the case when disassembling.

Are the transmissions for the 2.2 different from the 2.0? I found one for 1395.00 to my door.

I figure if I can get 400 out of mine I will be doing the same thing as just buying the LSD for 905?

I didn't ask the guy if it was for a 2.2 or a 2.0.
