Making my own short shifter

I have been looking for a short throw shifter for a while and they all have 2 things in common that I don't like....reverse lockout and they are still pretty tall. I like all the options of the TWM but I just can't bring myself to spend over $400 on a shifter and I have read mixed things about the hurst. So I bought a brand new shifter assembly from mongorat to put in my car for now since the shift boot and the silver piece on top are pretty worn on mine. I took mine out today, pulled the knob off, pulled the reverse lockout off and cut the shaft down about 2-2 1/2". I also bought the short shift kit from Genuine Saab (GenuineSaab.com) which should be here on wednesday. I am working with TWM to see what knobs they have to offer or can make that are a "clamp" on style, the ones that have set screws that tighten onto the shaft. Some might consider this the ricer/ghetto way around getting a short throw but I see it as the only way to get what I really want out of one becasue out of all the cars I have had I never went from 5th to reverse looking for a magical 6th gear and that lever **** is getting pretty old. As I mentioned before I do have an entire brand new assemly that will remain untouched so I can go back to stock. I will update with pictures as I go along. Now onto the few pictures I have so far.

popped off the silver piece and there was a **** ton of epoxy holding it on.

These are the splines that held the knob on.

This is with everything pulled off.

Cut, grinded and smoothed out.

Here is one so you can see the change in length.

How is it a fail? TWM, knob clamp and bushings was close to or over $400 last time I priced it out and if it doesn't work then I just put the stock one back on.

nice idea, in for the results. and i agree twm is far too much for me. if you want a certain shift knob they are like 80, then depending on what color you want it like 20 and up. it gets pricey really quick.

I got the bushings from OTTP from the black friday sale for $10 so those are out anyway. As far as the clamp I now know I dont need it but when I looked i figured I would add it in. But either way I still really hate the lockout and how tall the shifter is.

You do know this wont make your "Throw" any shorter... It's only making the shifter shorter.

Thats why I bought the Saab adapter, it makes the throw shorter. If you click the link it explains it all.

A short.shifter is not made by cutting the shaft. It makes the throw shorter. All you are doing.is.cutting the shaft, not reducing the throw. And there is nothing wrong with reverse lockout. And yes, that is ghetto/ half assed

The major difference in the TWM shifters are the shift throw not the knob height. If all you are looking to do is make the knob height on your car shorter, your idea will work fine. If you are looking to get shorter, smoother shifts, your modified shifter is not going to make any difference.

Does nobody read?? I know cutting the shaft doesn't make the throw shorter, I am using a piece made by genuinesaab.com to make the throw shorter.

What diameter is the shifter now that you have cut it down? Anychance you can just thread it to a standard size?
