The diameter is between 7/16" and 1/2", not sure if there is a shifter thats threaded between that but if there is I would like to thread it.
I only took off like 2", the pictures make it look really short but it should be fine. If it's too short then I will just come back on here and buy another shifter and cut it a little longer. I thought about it after but I should have started long and cut it to where I wanted it too be...oh well.

I ended up buying a carbon fiber shift knob for now and I just ordered my shift boot. I am really excited about the shift boot since, as advertised, there was only 1 other made so it should be pretty rare!
it will make the throws shorter....its basic math really.
just think of it this way. look at the big V and the little v (the distance from the tips of the tops of a big V & a lil v differs)
its the same concept, some material is taken off and the distance from one side to the other is reduced. sure the action of shifting has the same throw but just the reduced height of the shifter itself lessens the distance of travel.
I know this might sound stupid but its a great solution for someone not willing to drop 400 bills on a real short throw

shifter throw though not really mentioned is measured in degrees, its the relationship between the pivot and the cable mounting oiint. that's why shortiening the stick downtown change throw. It changes shifter travel, but not throw. His Saab kit alters the leverage ratio though and dOES alter throw.

The saab kit will be in today, just waiting on the knob and boot to come in now. I will post more pictures later when I put the saab piece on. The rest will most likely be in next week since the boot has to be made and will probably ship from redline on friday.
so far im in it $70 for the shifter (most would probably just cut the one they have), $35 for the knob, $50 for the saab kit and $80 for the boot. $230, wow I didn't realise how much but a lot of that was optional. This could be done for less than $100 depending on what knob you go with. I am really excited to see how it's going to look once it's all together.

I wasn't going to post the boot until I got it but here is what I bought. The knob is made by Autoteknic and its a weighted aluminum knob wrapped in carbonfiber. The boot is made by Redline Goods, it's a Bride Gradation material and apparently they had enough material to make 2 boots. I am having it made with color matched threads since nothing else in my car is red.

Let this be a lesson for you. When you do something there will be 15 people that sit behind the computer all say commenting on how everyone else's stuff sucks.
Nice work I have done that on many of my cars and I like the shorter shifter look rather than a long a$$ shifter way up in the air

I can't wait to get it put in. I talked to one of the guys at TWM and they only have the adapters for the VW's and they aren't sure if it will fit our shaft. The guy also said that he did this to his TC and had issues with it going into 5th "naturally" since the reverse lockout stops the shifter from going over too far because reverse is further left than 5th gear (almost like reverse on a 6spd). Guess we'll have to wait and see how it all works out. I did get the saab adapter in lastnight but I didn't have time to put it on the shifter.
HOLY ****! DOES ANYBODY READ ANYMORE??? seriously, i think these douchebags come in here, see that you are cutting it shorter and just jump all over it. he has stated a million times that not only is he shortening it, but also installing saab parts to reduce the throw angle.
whew..ok now that that's off my chest.
Props to you for being creative and making your own shifter. wish i had the tools and time to do stuff like that. I do have some good knowledge of fabrication and metal work, just not the necessary equipment. Goodluck!

BPack was on the first page when other people kept saying that, he was joking.....notice the tongue out face thing!! It's really not hard at all to do, just need a screw driver to take the shifter out and a saw or dremel to cut the shaft to the length you want. I happened to have a grinder and wire wheel so I cleaned up the end and hit it with a wire wheel to give it the same shine over all the exposed metal.
if you leave on the white plastic piece and just cut offf the part that locks out reverse and just mount it a lil higher it will leave 5th in the right position. i had to do it on mine. that way your not guessing trying to find 5th
Ive never seen so many people FAIL at reading..
good lulz thread.
OP good idea. I myself decided to just add the adapter. I like the feel hight and everything about the stock shifter.
