Manual transmition shifter move during driving?

So its been a good 6 years since I last drove a stick but to my recollection the shifter never moved when in gear.

OK.... When I drive my car, this happens in every gear but I notice it more in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. I shift up to about 45 miles and hour and im in lets say 4th gear. I have my hand rested on the shifter, obviously with a very slight tension towards me being in 4th gear. I left my foot off the gas and slow down a bit cause now I'm approaching 50 mph when the road im on is actually 40 :P I notice a jolt in the shifter *** when I let go on the gas, I also notice another jolt on the shifter *** when I put my foot back on the gas ever so slightly. I'm assuming its because the trans is being relaxed and then put back to work but from my recollection my old 93 escort never had this "jolt" feeling. I can feel it when I push up on the shifter *** and hold it into 3rd gear or 5th gear I get a kick back when I take my foot off the gas and put it back on the gas. Normal ?

Does anyone else experience this? or do I have a messed up trans or could this be a chevy thing? I drove my friends 03 mustang and I don't feel this "jolt" feeling. I also drove my step dads 02 jeep wrangler, that one was more difficult to tell cause the rides jumpy anyway but I didn't feel it either. I asked my dealer and they said it was normal. For some reason I don't think so.

it's not recommended to rest your hand on the shift knob while in gear.

^^^yeah when your in gear and driving, its not a good idea
thats the only time i feel vibration is if im pushing the shifter slightly out of its normal resting place while in gear. and for me, its only really noticable in 3rd gear

3rd gear is the most noticable, but it's normal my car has done it from day 1.

Every manual i've driven does that. And yes you shouldn't put pressure on the stick when not shifting. If you put enough you'll grind gears or just slip it out if you're at the right RPMs.

I know the tranny mounts are soft, just like the engine mounts, to provide more comfort when driving. It's likely the transmission shifting slightly, as other people have said.
