also, most stock cars, putting it in drive and keeping your foot on the floor is just as fast as dicking with it.
Except for certain Trans-Am's.....

Phillies? Sorry about that. You don't have a leg to stand on. You are still the losingest franchise in sports history, You haven't played well this year, you didn't play well last year. You did not win the division last year, we lost it. If we play .250 ball, we win by 4 games.

lol... I do not want to get into a baseball argument now.

If you wanted to shift, should have gotten an manual. You could convert the tranny to manual, or electronic shift.
1. Not racing, just trying to enjoy the car.
2. Read the original post, it's not my car, and my daily driver is a stick.

Thanks for the advice guys, i'll continue to upshift then i guess!

"fact of the matter is, take 2 cobalts, give them the exact same mods and exact same hp, with good drivers, the manual will win every single time. and you can't argue that, because it's a fact, not an opinion."

Except for those "missed"shift runs -- won't win those timesand that too is a fact!

Would make more sense for stick lovers to avoid threads by autotranny owners. I promise not to give advice to stick owners.....

i said good drivers. not some schmuck that doesn't know what he's doing.

let me rephrase that. the manual cobalt will always be faster, taking driver error out of the equation. a shitty driver in a very fast car can lose to cars it should lose to. doesn't mean the car is slower. it just means the driver sucks. i'm not knocking automatic cars, i've had my share. but that's the way the cobalt is.

If you want to enjoy it, and you dont care about it breaking, feel free. Like I said though, its not going to make it go faster than if you just kept it in drive. You could tune it to make it shift at peak points, but if its not yours then dont worry about it.

all true.
but the argument wasnt over preference, it was over functionality.

no one begrudges someones choice of an auto.
its when people try and argue that an auto is better in terms of pure performance that people disagree.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion on Automatics and shifting Vs positioning it in "D". All automatics, including the Cobalt's, benefit when you use "L" because the internal line pressure is higher and the low/reverse piston is put into play. The low/reverse piston is not used in "D" -- In fact on the Cobalt this happens when you position the shifter in "I" also. This helps the low end performance as it sets up the tranny to take more torque from the engine. If you have it in "L" it will shift by itself (regardless if you want it to or not) into second at redline -- right-on-time and faster then the driver can. It is tuned for maximum performance -- I really believe after driving my Cobalt in "L" and "I" that some "GEAR HEADS" actually had some input into this setup because it is really performance-minded

Just a question.

When 'my friend' manually puts the trans in L and uses his ShiftPlus on 2, you can hear what sounds like a fluid 'pssshhh' when it shifts.

The sound is slightly noticeable on the 1-2 shift (WOT) in "L", but is most noticable on the 2-3 shift (WOT) in "I"

What is this sound? Is it bad? My friend rarely runs the car with mode II on, but when he does, you can always hear the sound.

Hard to diagnose over the internet...you sure its not the tires spinning? It could also be a loose serpentine belt -- they can make an odd noise at the shift when they are loose because of the change in engine speed. There is also the possibility of converter chain "slap".

Nope it's definitely not tire spin on the 2-3 shift. It almost sounds like a fluid squish sound, it's hard to explain.

I'll try and get a video or sound clip for you.

On my SUV I can tell when the serpentine belt needs changing because when I "get on it" the belt will make a fast "Swish" sound at the shift -- and it sounds like a fluid type noise. When the belt starts to get loose it only makes this sound when in WOT at the shift points too. The first time I heard it I thought it was the tranny slipping. That is the only thing that comes to mind from the noise you described.

I get that sound all the time.

I think it's either the accessory belt slipping due to the harsh change in RPM, or something to do with the throttlebody

Hmm, i'm not sure if it's the belt or not.

The 'balt has just under 2000 miles on it, so it's barely broken in still.

I really only notice it in the 2-3 shift, probably because all I hear on the 1-2 shift is tire chirp!

Shifting anywhere in Drive, I or L is perfectly safe. Why? Its electronicly controlled.

No additional wear/tear is being done to the transmission(atleast on these).
