Mastershift paddle shifter system review
Mastershift paddle shifter system review
I installed a paddle shifter system from Mastershift into my Atom. Since I have the same engine and transmission from the Cobalt SS I thought you guys might be interested.

The system is bascially a box that connects to the existing shift cables. When the paddles are pressed, the mechanism in the box shifts the transmission mechanically into the gear selected. The clutch remains the same and still has to be pressed between gear shifts. I have it configured so that paddles shift up and buttons shift down.
you can get it with a sequential gear shifter instead

The system knows when the clutch is pressed, so it only shifts when the clutch is down. It behaves like a sequential shifter - one click - on gear change. Multiple clicks will shift ahead or back the same amount of gears.
You can pre-shift as well. You hit the button and then it waits for the clutch to be depressed before shifting. For example, you can be accelerating in second gear. Hit the paddle and keep accelerating. Then when you are ready to shift you just depress the clutch as fast as possible and it times the shift perfectly.
It is very fast and it will shift just as fast as you can press the clutch down and release it
So far I've not had any problems as long as I am paying attention to what gear Im in. I've miss-timed a clutch and shift and the system has a built in safety function that puts it into neutral to avoid grinding the gears.
I only know the cost for the system installed in my car. It took some customization to get it in. It has a custom mounting bracket and some custom wiring so that I can still remove the steering wheel with the quick release. So I would estimate the cost to be somewhere between $2-3K
Here is a video with a demonstration of running through the gears.

Here is the user manual to give you an idea of options changeable by computer access to the box
