New clutch 101

Hey guys and ladies, I need some help. I own a stock 2006 cobalt ss/sc and I think its time for a new clutch. It slips going into second and on shifts sometimes and even when i am using the cruise control it does not hold very well. So what do I do first? Is there an inspection I get or do I just go back to my dealer and tell them I want a new clutch.

P.S. This is the first manual trans car I have ever owned..just want to do it right.

First thing is I would avoid a dealer as their labor costs are going to be sky high. There are plenty of privately owned shops that will do a great job fro much less. Call one up after asking a few peoples opinions that have had service with them and have them check it out. They should be able to give you a definite answer if it is the clutch.

Yeah i would first take to a private shop have them let you know if its the clutch 100% then i would look into an aftermarket clutch as it will be similar pricing but higher quality especially if you are planning on the modding the car

Exact year and problem I had. I am getting mine done right now at a dealership; cause I work there. Labor is cheaper than going to a privately owned garage and I trust a Gm certified mechanic 100% more than a normal Joe blow. Get your flywheel machined and also get the throw out bearing replaced. I just bought the bearing for $250... it is ridiculously excessively expensive. I pay $45 an hour whereas normally it would be $74 an hour. Keep in mind I am Canadian.
What sucked on mine was that the clutch disc had material left but wouldn't grip because the flywheel was heat soaked and so was the pressure plate.

+1 on that ^

Replace the TOB now, or do the whole job over again because the TOB went out on you.

Dealership wanted almost 2,000 for my 05 ss Replacement. Find a place you can trust. I got mine done at my friends dads shop for 500+ the cost of clutch. Had it installed september last year and not a single problem.

Like everyone else has said... Machine the Flywheel at the very least, its better to just get a new one though.

i just installed my G85 trans and added the GMP performance clutch which comes with the TOB as well. Got it for a great price on Crateenginedepot, Just past the break in period and this thing holds. Im also at a pretty good WHP level as well. For the price you cant go wrong
