Question ok this is new for me. e-brake issues?

I've run across a completely new problem here everyone and I have no clue what it could be. I'm taking to the shop in the morning to have him take a look but I'm curious at the same time. Why would my e-brake not set. When you lift the handle the brake engages, but there's no clicking and when you let it go it just flops back down and the car starts rolling. It worked earlier tonight and ironically i went to help a friend fix her car and it quit working then. Nothing irregular on the drive there, just speed bumps. I'm lost here folks.

your ratchet system may have broke on the ebrake handle. pop off the console and make sure the 2 cables are still seated on the handle before looking a anything else though

oh its definitely more than that. my friend told me tonight that he could hear me coming from a mile away. sure enough we pulled over, and its like the brake is half engaged and squeaking and grinding while stopping, not during normal driving. and it only really engages if you pull up the handle as far as it can go so its obviously wearing out. this is an interesting predicament...

yeah as taz said, it's not a common problem, but it does happen. it only takes like 15 minutes to pop off the console and look

ok. popped it apart, found the little piece with the teeth on it laying in there, looks like the rivet popped off and the thing just fell out. so that piece is in my cupholder and i'm takin it to a shop tomorrow to get it fixed. car's not under warranty anymore so taking it to the dealer will cost me a $100 deductable for anything under the extended warranty. however that doesn't explain why it was squeaking and rubbing when i was pushing the brakes the other night, that was weird. and it was loud too. hmmm.....

pay $100, or get it from a junkyard for $20 and fix it yourself

what makes you say pay $100 for it?? this dealer won't even give me a car while they have it. I'm on a college budget so I need cheap. if you think its more than what i found in the handle then i could see paying that much to have it fixed.

i said pay $100, cause in the previous post you said your deductible was $100. it doesn't matter what the dealer does, i guarantee it will be well past $100 to get it fixed

well its at a local shop right now being looked at. if they're going to charge over 100 just to put one little piece back into place then i will take it back to the dealer and pay the deductible. if not then i didn't have to pay 100 to get it fixed.

should've just done what you said man. I took it to the shop and asked him to tell me what it would cost to get it fixed, didn't give authorization to work on it. just to look. and he calls me back saying he welded the piece back in so i wouldn't have to replace the entire assembly, cause that's what he would've done if it was his car, and tells me i owe him 142.50. I just went down there and lost it on his butt and ended up not paying him for anything but now I'm screwed out of getting it fixed properly because GM won't touch it since he freakin welded that back together. Who in their right mind would just start welding pieces of someone's car back together without asking? Dumb ass.

well if he welded it and you didnt pay.. its fixed!! what i would do is start looking at junkyards or online for the whole assemlby.. like above you can prolly get it for like 20.. then buy that and do a proper fix yourself
