Problems with hurst short throw shifter! Help!

ok.. so my brother decided to buy me a hurst short throw shifter for christmas. cool idea. anyways, we put it in last night and first of all he bought off a guy he works with at work and it was missing the snap ring that goes underneath the ball joint. so far that isnt causing any problems but its a matter of time. second, its all setup and in. the reverse lock works great and all the gears work perfect. the problem is 5th gear. first in no problem, second gear, perfect, third good, fourth good, and then you go to fifth. the way my stock shifter was, i push all the way to the right then straight up and that is fifth gear. with this shifter, i literally have to find fifth. its a pain in the ass. is this the way its supposed to be? not to mention this shifter isnt even that big of a difference from the stock shifter as far as throws. somebody please help. thank you..

U get used to it... Lol. Mines currently twists a bit. I'm going to have to drill out the one screw and rethread a higher quality one. Thats my only complain with the hurst.

he said he only paid 80 for it which isnt bad but now he is offering to give it back and then give me 80 towards another shifter. im trying to stay under 200 dollars tho. does anybody have a good short throw shifter for under 200 dollars. and cratenginedepot.com has manual shifters but none of them have the reverse lockout.

I have the hurst. You do get used to the fifth gear problem but I still hate it. When I get some money I am going to change it out.

With all short shifters, it shortens the shift pattern. Stock fifth is all the way to the right, with the STS it's not quite as far. Which is what makes it a short shifter. after a couple days you get used to it and prefer it.

incorrect.
OP, just spend some time adjusting it. its very picky, as any shifter. I would recommend the twm as there is no set screw like the hurst. Otherwise, fool around with the linkage and you will eventually get it right.

And since when in a short throw shifter are you short shifting into fifth gear?

whats wrong with the fifth gear?? ive had this for about two years and never had any problems

edit: your shifter cables are not set in the right place. if you play with them a bit, you can get it perfect. in hindsight, i kinda remember that. my problem was getting the reverse lockout functional

I think I'm gonna go against my usual strategy, which is, "Pay cheap prices, get crappy equipment." and try out the Hurst, though it's not really cheap, it's the cheapest out of the 3 mentioned, at least that I have found, plus a better selection of knob, able to accommodate stock and aftermarket knobs

I guarantee it's not adjusted properly. The reverse lockout is what determines your ability to find 5th and reverse. It's not just used for reverse. Just look at it and you can see this.

I have it, no problems at all. At the first time, it was, but then I've had it adjusted and it is great. Also a friend of mine has it on his, no problems for the 5th either.

Mine came in the mail last week.. Went to put install it a few days ago, got the stock shifter out and realized the Hurst was a few inches longer than stock.. Hurst shifter is getting sent back, and while the stock shifter was out, it got an inch 1/4 - inch 1/2 cut off, feels like a friends STS, with 0% of the price...

I have the TWM STS with upgraded cable clamp.and base bushings...it took me a day or 2 to get used to finding 5th its not all the way over and up its like 1/2" away from third...now that I got used to.it its butter...I got the stainless.knob too looks really good in the car...1" lower than stock and reduces throws by 33% and the upgraded cable clamp.is alot stronger than the stock plastic one and can take a beating....and the base bushings make for way smooth shifts too TWM FTW!!!
