reverse lights not being activated

I'm new here and wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but I have a 2005 Cobalt ss 5 speed. My reverse lights are not being activated by whatever is in the transmission that pushes the reverse light switch. What pushes the switch and how can I fix it? Thank you!

There is a sensor on top of the transmission that is depressed when reverse shift mechanism moves from right to left relative to the trans position when it's mounted in the car. I rather doubt it's an internal issue. Most likely bad switch or damaged wiring. If trans was removed recently I would lean towards damaged wiring as the harness is routed right above where bell housing mates to engine block.

actually, if you read his other thread, the switch works just fine. When pulled and depressed, the lights activate.

Yes the switch and everything works just fine when pressed manually out of the transmission, so it has to be internal.

OK. I still wouldn't rule out the switch. I'm not sure how far the switch is depressed normally when reverse gear is selected. It may only be depressed halfway normally. The switch contacts could just be worn out and still be able to complete the circuit if switch was to be depressed further than normal. If it is indeed an internal issue, that will not be an easy or cheap fix.

The switch is brand new so I'm not sure about that. And what actually pushed the switch? I was reading on the Internet about some other vehicles using ball bearings and all you'd do is put them in the hole for the switch and they press up on the switch when in reverse.

This is the spot the switch touches. That piece moves upward from where it's pictured.

Thanks for the pic. In his other thread I stated either the new switch is the culprit or it may be internal but I did not have the knowledge of how the switch was activated by the transmission. I guess reseat the switch one more time ensuring that is torqued down properly.
