short trow install reverse lockout help
Hey guys well the shifter is installed already, the only problem i see is that the car goes into reverse with out me lifting the lock. So in other words my reverse lock out doesnt work. Im thinking but i cant really find a good pic to compare but it seems like the tab might be broken on mine (red circle). If it is broken, anyone know the name of that plastic and where i could get one? And yes i know i need to clean that part but im not done yet

Great choice in shifter. I have one myself and love it. Totally different feel.
As for the lockout, you've got it right. What would normally prevent the shifter from going into reverse is that piece. Can you find a part number stamped on that plastic part anywhere?

Looks great. In my opinion no better shifter on the market. I also like the newer version shifter ball with the pattern etched in. Wish they would have had it when I ordered mine.
By the way, love the white dash components. Always been a huge fan of bright white interiors. Looking forward to more pics of the whole setup.

HELP!
I was racing from a dig, and the shifter popped out going from second to third. I didn't know what happened, only that I was stuck in neutral and the shifter was just moving up and down freely. Luckily, I had enough speed and the light ahead was green, so I coasted in a spot to try to figure out wtf.
I popped the cup holder out, and was able to feel under there the right cable had come loose from the bottom of the shifter. I was able to pop the shifter back into the end of the cable and was able to get the car home.
It feels like the shifter might be higher than it was, and it's hard for me to tell what's going on under there. Do I need to get a screwdriver or something and try to push it up on the bottom of the shifter more? It feels like there's a little more room on the shifter to go in, but I haven't been able to get it to go further in by cramming my hands in there and pressing on it.
I might have to disassemble the whole thing, dunno. I guess you need pictures. I just haven't messed with this before, but am relieved at least it seems like an easy fix.
It's the silver Hurst shifter with the shift pattern on it.
I just didn't know if there was something that attaches to the bottom that's supposed to hold it in the end of the cable, or if it just pops in.
I did some speed shifting in the garage and it didn't pop out, but now I am super paranoid, and want to fix it right.

I just found that thread, and read it.
According to the instructions, it just pops in...
shifting seems to work fine again once I popped it back in, but I am just super paranoid about it popping out again, like on the highway or something. I was shifting a little quicker than normal as I was pulling away from the other vehicle, and maybe I did something that created resistance... it popped out as I was going to 3rd. It made it to neutral then popped out before I got it into gear.
Has anyone else ever had this happen?
Anyway, thanks for the quick response, you're awesome as always!

Actually, this is the thread I read...
TWM Performance
Chevrolet Cobalt SS Short Shifter Install DIY
So I will give the one you gave me a look-over. Seems a little more involved, there's a little boot thing where it pops in or something...

Ok, I notice the old shifter connected at 90 degrees, so perhaps it is less likely to pop out like that, or the previous owner didn't have it in all the way, or who knows. Maybe I just did something stupid to make it pop out. I'll see if I can get it to go in some more... I normally don't NLS but was trying to get every bit of advantage I could while pulling away from this guy... maybe I forced it between 1-3 and that caused it to pop out. Usually it just goes into third, though... oh well.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

I just went threw this problem with my SS. You need the metal shifter cable clamp from OTTP. Look at the damage on the bushing of my old one. I'll be back to post a link of the metal one that will solve all your problems. Mine used to pop out from 2nd to 3rd
Here's the link to the part you need to fix it. Do yourself a favor and look at the current one, it may be done for like mine was.

THANK YOU! I always knew cable clamp upgrades were good, but didn't realize my shifter would pop out like that! The clamps are holding fine, so I was putting it off, but I am ordering one now!!!
That was some scary *****! And to think it could have happened in worse situations... luckily it happened in a perfect scenario, and now I know what to do to fix it. The Cobalt gods looking out for me, I guess.
