SS TC trans bearings keep going out

Seems to start 10-15k after clutch was put in. Chevy dealership installed the stage 1 clutch. They did say they put a new style oil into it. Since that point I had the OEM oil put back in, but the bearings failed shortly after that. They said they changed out all the bearings to fix the problem.

Now I'm hearing the same whining noise again. About 10-15k miles since last breakdown.

I make about 276hp. Also, ever since the clutch was done, the shifter wont go into 5th cleanly. the shifter catches a little to the right of the 5th position on the horizontal gate.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? does the shifter cable not being adj right for 5th cause this problem?

What was the noise you were hearing when the bearings were going out?

If he is talking about the bearings in the final drive then it will be a sort of grinding noise while coasting in gear. I had to have my transmission replaced because of it.

What if you take it out of gear and let it roll in neutral? You hear it still cause I get a noise rolling on theat high speeds kinda like a whining. When I take it out of gear or out the clutch in it doesn't stop. It goes away when it slows down but I have a feeling it's something in the trans

When I took it out of gear the noise would stop. Mine only made noise while in gear so I'm unsure of what might be causing your noise.

Last 2 I took apart had a bad main shaft bearing..Both had been "built" Another issue is too much sealer on the case haves getting in the threaded holes. When the bolts were tightened it cracked the case by the throw out bearing area..

Hmm I wonder what it sounds like.. Not sure if the sound I'm having is Trans related!

I had them print out the sales receipt from last time, they didn't replace all the bearings.

Mine whines out of gear both times. Here is what they replaced the 1st time:

90490864 Bearing 4.408 - Transmission Mainshaft Center/Rear
90490871 Bearing 4.408 - Mainshaft Center/Rear. Transmission Rear Internal Gear
90490861 Bearing 4.352 - Transmission Clutch Gear. Transmission Input and Turbine Shaft
24422067 Pipe 0.785 - Hydraulic Clutch Reservoir
88958853 Clip 0.785 - Hydraulic Clutch Reservoir

I have been trying to get hold of FMSR for some info or a rebuilt trans, but so far they haven't called me back, maybe they were on vacation last week. I see they have something called an upgraded bearing, anyone know what part I need to order for this? Does it require any machining to the trans? I realize this probably won't fix the problem, since it is something physically wrong that must be causing this problem.

I'm dropping the car off at the dealership today to have them start working on it.

I got a billet pro shop short shifter on order, to see it this fixes my going into 5th gear problem. The stock blue plastic piece seems to be narrold off on the right side, this piece looks like what prevents over travel on the right side of the travel.

Well, I'm back, I think that bearing noise is coming back, maybe it is the cold weather making it louder.
As noted in 9/23 I had another trip to the dealership for more replacement of some of my bearings @88k on the trans, now I'm @95K. The 1st time was around 76k miles.

Here is a list of parts that GM dealer replaced on 9/26:
90490868 Bearing 4.352 - clutch gear trans input & turbine Shaft
90490871 Bearing 4.408 - Mainshaft Center/Rear. Transmission Rear Internal Gear
55353153 Seal 6.061 - Axle Seal
90511105 Bolt 4.422 2qty - Torx screw for fastening the belt tensioner
90486235 Gasket 4.318 - Rear cover gasket
88862472 Fluid 8.800 - SAE 75W-85 GL/4

They claimed only 1 ball of 1 bearing had a rough spot this time.

Also, the short shifter I had the dealer put in, did resolve most of the getting into 5th problem.

So, any ideas on what I should try next? Looks like I bought the car on 1/24/09 so 5yr drivetrain warranty is about up.

Did I hear somewhere in the past that if the dealership works on same item 3 times, it's considered a lemon & u get a new one? Unforchantly it currently isn't a loud enough noise for them to work on it again, I don't think.

Also, list of stuff done to the car so far: cold air kit, smallest aftermarket intercooler I could find, downpipe & hi-flow cat, stage 1 GM kit, stage 1 clutch, poly trans mounts(with 8 3/8" holes in each to make them softer) & HP tuners tweaking. Makes 276hp/315tq.

I am road on by my coworkers that I shift to early(1700rpms), I generally grunt the motor, WOT <2000rpm a lot, unless in spirited mood. Would this be hard on bearings?

Also, no one replied back on the request on info of some magical upgraded bearing that FMSR puts in their trans rebuilds?

I don't know why your trans wasn't replaced. Mine was replaced due to the same issue a few months ago. As far as waranty, the work done on the transmission should be good for 12 months or 12,000 miles even if your powertrain warranty is up.

Well the dealership has my trans out, it is a bearing again. They want to replace it again. I really don't want put the same tans back n again w/new bearings, even thought I'm still under warranty, but they say they can't get my car off the rack & back into the parking lot without putting it back together again.

Any know of any replacement trans I can get quick? I prefer a slightly stronger than stock trans.

Do they return calls? The voice mail I left twice, in sept, didn't get a response back & when I call the number on their site, it sound like I'm getting a cell phone career's auto response, not a business voice mail. This doesn't sound like a very reputable company from 1st impressions.

Shift up higher and don't go WOT in low rev's. I know the sound of BPV is irresistible and it's nice to show off but not good for the hardware.

I used to shift as soon as possible(low rev's) on my old car, but the TC clutch like's to grab better/smoother up higher in the rev's and the tranny will thank you for it.

My trans does the same thing. The previous owner told me it was ''rebuilt'' . But still goes threw all the gears cleanly, whine is super loud though in first gear.

You need to change your driving style.. Grunting the motor at under 2K and going WOT is putting all the stress on your transmission where the car makes alot of TQ down low.. Put the stock mounts in there is no need to have poly inserts you have rotated mounts so wheel hop should not be an issue and since you have either Hpt or a tuner local id tune her to be alittle easy on tq in first gear and below 3K rpms in every gear.. Your not going to make the issue go away without changing something in the way YOU drive!

As far as 5th not liking to go in it's your cables most of the time! It could be the stock shifter cage has loosened which is why the short shift helped.. If it's still there an adjustment is needed!

This is showing the missing bearing on the top left shaft where the bearing came from.

thedubsack85: I was wondering if my driving style was causing the problem, but we don't see full tq @ these RPMs. Is it the combination of slow trans gear speed not picking up the oil & a lot of tq, even though not full tq?
I put the poly mounts, in because I've had problems with my previous car, Eagle Talon 94, blowing the mounts out often, in a FWD automatic w/shift kit. & I noticed less tq steer after installing them in. Also, I find this car seems to be really sloppy in unloaded motor to loaded motor slack, had hoped this would help the problem, but still exists.

As far as driving style, I find myself having to choose between first and second often. If I go into second then I will have to lug it a bit but I don't get on it. If I choose first gear then after a second or two I have to shift to second because I'm already at 3k. Is lugging it a bit ok as long as I'm not going ***** to the wall?

You may not see full torque but that does not mean alot is not there.. If people advise stomping on in it low RPMS in fifth then it should be the same for all gears! If your car is real sloppy then your mounts them selves may be worn out! And poly inserts are not going to help! TQ steer is going to happen it's FWD with decent power there's no getting around it! Hold the wheel straight... Lol
