Manual Transmission Fluid GM P/N 88861800, 1.7qts for a drain and fill. for getrag 5-speed

When filled, fluid level should be at the bottom of the fluid check plug hole

The SS/SC is getrag, but the part number is the later one.

I put Castrol 75W90 full Synth gear lube in my transmission and it's working great.

the f35 in the sc cobalt is not a getrag, its actualy a saab tranny. it takes a special fluid specificly made by castrol for the application. castrol says there is no compatable fluid aside from this stuff, and can only be bought from the dealer.

the f23 is a getrag, it uses typical dexron III or VI

the manual says that a saturn part number xxxxxxxxx is required but if not availible a dextron 3 can be used as a alternative... but if you look into this saturn fluid more closely it is gl-4 certified... and RP is one of the VERY few manual transmission gear oils that are gl-4 approved... i put a full syn version of dextron in my car and it did not like it gears felt rough and not smooth i then put RP full syn 75-90 back in and it was great again better than stock... so as long as whatever you are using is gl-4 approved then your good...

Yeah, most auto parts chains carry 75w90.

Most commercial synthetic 75w90 oils are GL4 or 5 approved. Just make sure it's full synthetic.

thats all true the 35 it is a GM Fiat/Saab powertrain product, the the OEM fluid is actually 75w90 GL4 Silkolene, Castrol do a BOT version they label a lot of products. I buy mine from the GM dealer or at a bike shop, most street racer bike shops carry it DO NOT OVERFILL....thats important

Fluid type: Castrol BOT 0063
Transmission weight: 45 kg ( 99 lb )
Fluid capacity (approximate): 1.7L / 2.0 qt ( dry )
Power take off: no
Applications: Chevrolet Cobalt SS
Saturn Ion Red Line

so i think my post got deleted by a moderator who is a total ****... and a fan boy ... but..

i replaced my in trans fluid with royal purple. it was great during the summer.. but horrible during winter. i had a hard time shifting into gears untill the trans was fully warmed up. if you live in a warm climate then use it... i ended up replacing it with the gm recommended

You want Redline 75W90NS or GM/Saturn branded ONLY.

You DO NOT want an off the shelf auto parts stock fluid as many contain friction modifiers.

Personally, I run the Redline. You want 2 quarts, I believe it actually holds around 1.8 IIRC.

Doesn't matter what seal of approval they carry if they have friction modifiers. (RP and M1 both do)

Check the bottle to make SURE they do not contain friction modifiers before you use them.

Actually, I don't believe the F35 is a GETRAG.

Bringing up threads from the dead.. as I'm trying to research this.

OK red06SC

You said you would either use redline or the GM fluid. Even though this GM magical fluid is suppose to be GL-4, Redline 75W90NS is GL-5. Why do you suggest using this over a Mobil 1 or Royal Purple with the same grade?

About part number 88861800...

Is anyone 100% sure this is the right stuff. It goes for like 5 bucks a quart, I'm pretty sure this is nothing more then reg dexIII for the getrag. If you got this in your SS/SC tranny, I suggest you dump it asap.

Now part # 21018899 seems like the right stuff (castrol bot 0063), but the real question is what exactly is it? Does anyone have a MDS or a VOA of it? Haven't been able to find one. Until we figure out a type of oil that is compatible to this based on actual data we will probably never know.

For people using non approved stuff like Mobil 1, if you say your car runs well... just take it as that...if you want further validation get a UOA. And seriously don't worry about your warranty... what will be there proof you are using the wrong fluid? The taste, the smell, the color.... **** even Royal Purple is dirty black when everything is said and done.

Trust the dealership cant/will not take out the proper time to prove you are using the wrong thing. Especially since this is "long life" fill and isn't meant to be changed lol.

After more research it looks like 21018899 will be superceded to 88862472.
