i encounter a lot of traffic when i get out of work and the stop and go is killing my brakes. The last few days i've been driving in the I gear so i'm not slamming the brakes every 5 seconds. I know this gear should usually be used for inclines but is this gear also a good idea to use in traffic?

you'll be fine. "I" is a normal driving gear. just don't go pretending you have a manual and start shifting back and forth.

 

yes and no....using the gears on an automatic makes the tq converter spin when your not on the gas, which heats the tranny fluid as well...however, since your not moving much in traffic, its not being cooled down much when it passes through the radiator. i would avoid it on really hot days when in traffic for a long time....otherwise, its no big deal and is totally safe

You should be fine.

If you aren't 100% confident, you could always do what I do.

Get an aeroforce interceptor gauge, and watch your tranny temperatures while in traffic. 150-175 seems to be about normal for my car. When using "I" in traffic, it usually stays at about 170*, but will occasionally reach about 180 when coming to a stop, and sitting there for a bit. As soon as I start moving again, it drops right back to 170ish.

I would like to test it on the the road into Canyon Lake, lots of low speed twisties.

 

you will not do any damage driving your car like that. just remember, if it can damage the tranny, gm wouldnt have put it there as they would have to fix it under warrenty
